Pinocchio Leads Beach to Series Opening Win
Junior Drives in Three and Has a Double and Triple

DAVIS, CA-- What a difference a week makes. After appearing in just one game over the previous two months prior to April 15, AJ Pinocchio has gotten a hit in each of his last four games, including a key two-run triple in the eighth, to give Long Beach State (17-18-1) an 9-4 road victory over UC Davis (13-20).

Pinocchio drove in three with a double and a triple in five at-bats today, after picking up his first collegiate homer on Tuesday at UCLA and his first collegiate hits, in each game of a doubleheader at CS Northridge on April 15.

Perry added two hits and two RBIs from the top of the order, as Jared Hughes (6-1) picked up his sixth win of the year.

Pinocchio's two-run triple in the eighth, put the Dirtbags up 8-4, after the Aggies closed to within 6-4 in the seventh. The Dirtbags originally went up 5-0 after four innings. A sacrifice fly made it 9-4 in the ninth.

Brett Andrade, who came on for starter Jared Hughes in the seventh with runners on first and second, went the final two and one-third innings for his third save.

Andrade was aided by a relay play from leftfield to throw out Tyler LaTorre at the plate following an RBI double from Lukas Kirby to keep it at 6-4.

Hughes, who tired after six and two-third innings, gave up four runs on six hits, stirking out five, in a performance that was better than the line score suggested.

The Beach built a 5-0 lead early, and a 3-0 lead in the second off of five hits and three consecutive, two-out singles.

Tito Cruz' two-out single gave LBSU a 2-0 lead, before Perry's single completed the five-hit attack with a single to make it 3-0.

The Dirtbags added to their lead in the fourth, with an RBI triple from Perry followed by an RBI double from Pinocchio to lead 5-0.

Michael Potter (2-3), who had beaten CS Fullerton and Pacific in back-to-back starts, went just four innings for the Aggies, giving up five runs on nine hits.

The series continues on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. The Beach returns home next Tuesday when they host San Diego State at Blair Field at 6:30 p.m.
