49ers Fall Again in the Ninth, 4-3
Inability to Close Game Continues for The Beach

April 13, 2006

BOX SCORE

NORTHRIDGE, CA-- For the second-straight game Long Beach State (15-17, 3-1 Big West) lost a game in ninth as Scott Lyons' two-out, two-run single in the final frame gave CS Northridge (18-19, 2-5 Big West) a 4-3 come from behind win.

Bryan Shaw (1-1) and eventual loser entered the ninth with a 3-2 lead, but gave up a leadoff single but was unable to get the runner at second a poorly placed bunt, putting runners on at the corners. Brett Andrade though came on and got the runner at the plate on a comebacker, and another fielder's choice to put two outs on the board. But following a walk, Lyons' bloop single to right gave CSUN the series opening victory.

All four of the Matador runs were unearned as the 49ers left 12 runners on base, forcing the bases loaded three times in the contest. Joe Roccio (3-1) got the win for the Matadors, despite giving up the go-ahead run in the ninth.

Long Beach loaded the bases in the top of the ninth to take a 3-2 lead, following a leadoff single by Matt Cline. Joe Roccio intentionally walked Evan Longoria and then walked Scott Bradley, before Shane Peterson came through with an infield hit off the third base bag.

Robert Perry had three hits, and Jose Hernandez had two in the losing cause. LBSU has now blown four games this season, including the game on Tuesday at San Diego State.

LBSU starter Jared Hughes tired in the the eighth, giving up a bases loaded walk with two outs to tie the game at 2-2. A catcher's interference allowed the inning to continue, resulting in the second unearned run of the game. Hughes went seven and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs on five hits. Hughes hit four batters in the game, two to help load the bases in the eighth.

Hughes benefitted from his defense throughout the day. Kip Masuda picked a runner off first in the fifth and caught another trying to steal in the first. Leftfielder Shane Peterson threw out a runner at third to end the fourth and first baseman Scott Bradley completed a double play on a popout in the third.

Craig Baker pitched seven solid innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking three.

Both starters had dueling no-hitters early, pitching to the minimum over the first three innings.

A Richard Cates infield single broke up Hughes no-hitter in the third, before Perry's single to center broke up Baker's no-hitter in the fourth.

The Beach produced three hits in the fourth, taking away the shuout as well, as back-to-back singles by Evan Longoria and Scott Bradley gave LBSU an early 2-0 lead.

An unearned run in the fourth cut the lead to 2-1 on a two-out single, but James Scott was thrown out at third to end the threat.

In the first inning, Hughes became the 49ers' all-time hit-batsman leader, plunking career No. 30 in his two-year career.

The series with their San Fernando Valley neighbors on Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
