Beach Takes Game One 5-1, Darkness Ties It GAME ONE | GAME TWO Andrew Carpenter (5-2) evened the series in game one, with a complete-game five hitter, striking out a career-high 10, as The Beach broke open the game with a three-run ninth. Robert Perry's two-run double in the ninth ignited the two-out rally. Evan Longoria's three-run homer in game two gave LBSU an early 3-0 lead, before CSUN tied it at 3-3 by the fifth inning. Then it was dueling relievers the rest of the game, as Jimmy Brettle and Vance Worley traded scoreless innings. It was LBSU's first doubleheader since 2002, when they split two at LSU in early March. The second half of the 49ers' season-long eight-game roadtrip continues at UCLA on Tuesday and at UC Davis for a three-game series starting on Friday. (GAME TWO): With no lights at Matador Field, the game was called after nine innings with a 3-3 tie. Evan Longoria's three-run homer in the third opened up game two, giving LBSU a 3-0 lead. The Matadors were able to tie it in the fourth off a two-run, two-out single from Scott Lyons after CSUN scored an unearned run in the third. The hit, chased starter Donnie Hume from the game, as he gave up three runs on seven hits over four and two-thirds innings. Edwin Quirarte was gone by the fifth as well for CSUN, giving up three runs on four hits. Worley pitched four and one-third scoreless innings of relief, retiring eight in a row, before yielding to Andrew Liebel, who pitched a scoreless ninth. (GAME ONE) LBSU 5, CSUN 1: In the opener, Carpenter struck out a career-best 10, including the last batter of the game, while giving up one run on five hits. Carpenter retired seven in a row through the middle innings, throwing just 105 pitches for the game. The Beach broke open the game in the ninth, scoring all three runs with two outs to lead 5-1. With a 2- 1 lead and after intentionally walking Longoria for the second time in the game, Robert Perry made the Matadors pay, sending a two-run double to right center to give LBSU a 4-1 lead. Scott Bradley followed Perry in the ninth with an RBI single to make it 5-1. Earlier in a one-run game in the seventh, eventual loser Chuck Fick (3-6) got Perry to pop up with Longoria on first and Kip Masuda at second. Fick ended up with eight-plus innings, giving up three runs on five hits. Reliever Bobby Paschal gave up three consecutive hits in the ninth. Back-to-back, two-out RBI singles from Chuck Sindlinger and Evan Longoria gave The Beach a 2-1 advantage in the fifth. A solo homer by Steve Lemmon in the second gave CSUN an early 1-0 lead.
