Dirtbags Survive at LMU 9-8

Dirtbags Win Back-and-Forth Battle with LMU LOS ANGELES, CA-- Freshman Bryan Shaw (1-0) settled down a back-and-forth 405-Freeway battle, pitching the final three and one third innings of relief, as No. 19-ranked Long Beach State (11-7) held on to defeat Loyola Marymount (6-12) 9-8 on Tuesday afternoon. Shaw gave up one run on three hits, as Matt Cline went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Tito Cruz and Shane Peterson had three hits a piece.Shaw came on in the sixth with the bases loaded, two outs and a tie game and induced a groundout, before retiring the next four in a row as LBSU took a 9-7 lead. He surrendered a run in eighth to make it 9-8 on two of the seven doubles by LMU. Eric Farris went 2-for-4 day with three RBIs, as Mike Kenney (0-1) suffered the loss giving up the go-ahead runs in the seventh. Cline's two-run single in the seventh gave the Dirtbags a 9-7 lead, the second time on th day the second baseman had given LBSU the lead. Back... In the sixth, LBSU scored two three times to take a 7-5 lead. A sacrifice fly tied it, before RBI singles from Danny Espinosa and Evan Longoria gave back the lead to The Beach. LMU's Farris' then tied it with a two-run single in the sixth at 7-7. ...And forth. LMU retook the lead in the fifth with three runs, as Espinosa's second error of the game allowed two of the three runs to be unearned and gave LMU a 5-4 lead. Andre Lamontagne in his collegiate debut gave up three runs (one earned) in his one inning of work. Back... The Beach took a 4-2 lead in the fourth with three runs, tying it with an RBI single from Robert Perry and then the lead with a two-run single from Cline. ...And forth. Two doubles by LMU, the second by Farris gave the Lions a 2-1 lead, after Cline led off the game with a single and came around to score on a double play ball to give the Dirtbags a 1-0 lead. Scott Turmail left after three innings, giving up two runs on two hits Outfielder Sean Boatright, out the past week with the flu and for the past seven games, took batting practice with the team but was still not ready to go. Chuck Sindlinger, who also missed the weekend with the flu, also took batting practice. The Dirtbags travel to defending national champion Texas this weekend for a three-game series.
