Texas Leaves Dirtbags on the Field AUSTIN, TX-- No. 16-ranked University of Texas (12-8) left visiting No. 19-ranked Long Beach State (11-8) on the field in the ninth, scoring three times and ruining a strong pitching performance from Dirtbag starter Jared Hughes, defeating LBSU 4-3. Hughes pitched into the ninth, giving up a leadoff walk, before yielding to eventual loser Donnie Hume (0-1) with a 3-1 lead, who gave up a single and a walk to load the bases with one out. Bryan Shaw then came on and gave up an astroturf two-run single over first to Preston Clark to tie it, before an RBI single by pinch-hitter Hunter Harris through the left side ended it. Hughes gave up two runs on four hits over eight-plus inning, striking out nine and walking three, but earning a no-decision. Hughes cruised through the middle innings, using just 68 pitches through six, and retiring 10 in a row before a two-out walk and a single put runners on at first and second in the seventh. The Longhorns first threat of the night ended in a fielder's choice as LBSU built a 3-0 lead the very next half inning. Evan Longoria chased Texas starter Adrian Alaniz from the game in the eighth by grooving a 3-2 fastball up the middle to score Robert Perry from third to give LBSU a 1-0 lead. Longoria's seven-pitch at-bat followed a Perry one-out hit-by-pitch, and a potential double play ball that was throw into shallow left by shortstop Bradley Suttle, putting runners on the corners with one out. Longoria had entered the at-bat, connecting on just 5 for his last 21, put kept his average over .400 with his team-best 13th RBI of the season. Tito Cruz's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded then made it 2-0, before a pinch-hit single from Scott Bradley made it 3-0. Alaniz went seven and one-third innings, giving up three unearned runs off of five hits for Texas. Texas made it 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth on a groundout following a one-out triple from Nick Peoples, the lone hard ball hit by Texas on the night. LBSU had a chances to break the scoreless tie in the sixth; following a two-out triple by Danny Espinosa, and in the fifth; following two leadoff singles, but each time, Alaniz was able to work out of the jamps. The rest of the rotation for the series has been set with Kyle McCullouch (1-2, 3.60) opposing Dirtbag righthander Andrew Carpenter (2-1, 2.10) on Saturday at 12 p.m. Pacific and Kenn Kasparek (1-1, 4.29) and Dirtbag Vance Worley (1-3, 4.30) going on Sunday at 11 a.m. Pacific. |
