Carpenter Evens Series with Gutsy Effort
Righthander Pitches Complete Game in 87 Degree Heat

March 11, 2005

BOX SCORE

AUSTIN, TX-- The pitch count read 115. The temperature said 87 degrees. But all that mattered for Long Beach State righthander Andrew Carpenter (3-1) was the scoreboard, following his strikeout of pinch-hitter Bryan Herrera, as the No. 19-ranked Dirtbags (12-8) evened its series with No. 16-ranked Texas (12-9) with a 5-3 win.

Carpenter pitched his second complete game of the season, giving up three runs on eight hits on a warm afternoon, as he struck out four and walked two. Shane Peterson fell a double short of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including his first collegiate homer. Tito Cruz had his third-straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Carpenter retired eight in a row into the seventh, before a one-out double followed by a single by pinch-hitter Preston Pehrson made it 5-3. A double play ball kept it that way as Carpenter was cruising to that point, using just 79 pitches through six and scattering just two hits after giving up two runs in the first.

Peterson added to the lead in the fifth with an RBI triple to make it 5-2 after Cruz took an 0-2 pitch down the leftfield line to score Danny Espinosa and make it 4-2. Both runs came with two outs.

More offense came about in the first two innings, than all of yesterday, as a two-run single by Texas rightfielder Kyle Russell in the first was followed by a three-run homer by Peterson in the second to give LBSU a 3-2 lead. It was Peterson's first collegiate homer, into the picnic area in right centerfield.

Texas starter Kyle McCullough (1-3), pitching on four day's rest following a three-inning save at Rice on Tuesday, went the first five innings, giving up five runs on seven hits. Joey Parigi kept the Dirtbags off balance for the next four innings, pitching to the minimum.

The series concludes with Vance Worley (1-3, 4.30) throwing for The Beach against Kenn Kasparek (1-1, 4.29) at 11 a.m. Pacific.
