Worley Suffers Fourth Loss of the Season

AUSTIN, TX-- No. 16-ranked Texas (13-9) unloaded for five runs in the fifth and cruised past visiting No. 19-ranked Long Beach State (12-9) with a 7-3, series deciding victory on Sunday afternoon.

The Longhorns twice came back from 1-0 and 2-1 leads by The Beach as Vance Worley (1-3) gave up six runs on 10 hits over five innings. Kenn Kasparek (2-1) countered with six innings of two-run, five hit baseball to pick up his second win.

LBSU did load the bases in the eighth and scored one to make it 7-3 on a bases loaded walk, but a Tito Cruz double play ball ended the inning for the Dirtbags.

Drew Stubbs' two-run triple off the centerfield wall made it 4-2, after three-straight singles tied up up at 2-2. Centerfielder Robert Perry had to leave the game after hitting the wall following Stubbs' drive. Perry's status is day-to-day. Carson Kainer's RBI single then made it 5-2, before a two-out single extended the lead to four.

Matt Cline's second RBI groundout of the game, in the fifth, made it 2-1.

Worley pitched to the minimum through three, before a one-out solo homer from Chance Wheeless tied it at 1-1 in the fourth. Worley then loaded the bases, before getting Preston Pehrson to strikeout to keep it tied.

Following a leadoff double by Allen Woods in the third, the Dirtbags got on the board with groundout by Cline to lead 1-0.

The Dirtbags return home for a three-game series with Wichita State starting next weekend. This Wednesday's Mike Weathers Show will feature Shane Peterson and Chuck Sindlinger from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 4115 Viking Way in Long Beach at Cirvivello's.
