Wichita State Takes Series Opener 9-0

Dirtbags Drop Opener to Wichita State LONG BEACH, CA-- No. 23-ranked Wichita State (18-3) scored three times in the first and cruised past host No. 21-ranked Long Beach State (12-10) 9-0 on Friday evening. The rain stayed away, but it did not stop the Dirtbags current losing streak, as the program have lost six of its last nine. LBSU managed just five hits. Jared Hughes (4-1) suffered his first loss of the year, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits, striking out three and walking one. It was just his third loss since mid-March, 2006, two of them coming to the Shockers. Travis Banwart pitched seven strong innings, allowing just four hits to pick up his second career win against Hughes. Robert Perry and Shane Peterson had two hits a piece. Wichita State scored its first five runs with two outs, plating two in the seventh to lead 5-0. Damon Sublett's second of threee singles made 4-0, befor a throwing error by Evan Longoria, only his second of the season, made it 5-0. The Dirtbags had a chance to get on the board in the sixth following a dropped foul by leftfielder Tyler Hill. Peterson's "second life" resulted with a single to put runners on second and third, but a shallow popup, off the bat of Sean Boatright, this time was caught by Hill to end the inning. Three consecutive singles gave Wichita State a quick 3-0 lead, following a two-out single by Sublett to start things. Four total hits and a hit by pitch were given up by Hughes in the first. Mike Malott gave up four runs on four consecutive hits in the ninth to give WSU a 9-0 lead. Sean Boatright returned to the lineup for the first time since February 19 and was in the lineup at designated hitter. The series continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. |
