Dirtbags Can't Hold Lead in the Ninth
WSU Has Final Comeback as Wichita State Takes Series

LONG BEACH, CA--Derek Schermerhorn drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth as No. 23-ranked Wichita State (19-3) won a seesaw affair with host No. 21-ranked Long Beach State (12-11) 8-7 on Saturday afternoon.

Kip Masuda and Shane Peterson had three hits a piece, while Matt Cline added two hits as part of an 11-hit attack after LBSU took leads of 7-6 and 2-0 in the contest.

A sacrifice fly by Damon Sublett tied it at 7-7 as WSU loaded the bases in the ninth off of loser Donnie Hume (0-2), before reliever Bryan Shaw gave up the game-winning hit to Schermerhorn. Sublett, who had three hits, pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

The Dirtbags finally got that big inning it had been lacking recently, coming back from a four-run deficit to lead 7-6 in the seventh. Noah Kroll, who could not get an out following starter Rob Musgrave, gave up three runs.

Shocker starter Rob Musgrave gave up four runs on eight hits over six and 1/3 innings of work and had given it over to the bullpen with one out and 6-2 lead. After putting two runners on base to leadoff the seventh and following a groundout chasing Musgrave from the game, LBSU scored five times to lead 7-6. A two-run single by Peterson tied it a 6-6, before a sacrifice fly by Godfrey made it 7-6.

Andrew Carpenter was dealing strikes early in the game, striking out five over the first four frames and scattering just two hits. Carpenter then got into trouble in the sixth, giving up four straight hits to start the sixth and before it was done, allowing four runs to WSU to give the Shockers a 5-2 lead. He left with a no decision.

Carpenter would leave soon after, giving up five runs on eight hits. Hume then gave up a run in the seventh to spot WSU to a 6-2 lead.

Shane Peterson's RBI single in the second gave LBSU a 1-0 lead, following a leadoff double by Sean Boatright, his first hit after missing three weeks of the season. A hit by pitch with the bases loaded made it 2-0.

The series finale concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. with Vance Worley (1-4, 5.24) against Kris Johnson (2-0, 6.14).
