Shockers Comeback Again, Sweep

LBSU Swept by Wichita State LONG BEACH, CA--No. 21-ranked Long Beach State (12-12) gave up five unearned runs and allowed No. 23-ranked Wichita State (20-3) to comeback for the second straight day and win 10-7 on Sunday afternoon. Evan Longoria and Sean Boatright had two hits a piece in the loss, as LBSU's infield defense twice allowed big innings for the Shockers, as WSU scored five runs in the fifth and eighth innings, each time because of an error. Another LBSU error on the infield led to tie game in the eighth at 7-7 after a potential double play ball instead resulted in runners and second and third with one outs. Three more runs would come across as WSU led 10-7. Long Beach State took the lead in the sixth with three runs to lead 7-5. Longoria's solo homer led off the sixth, before an RBI single to right was followed by a three-base error by rightfielder Matt Brown made it 7-5. Worley retired nine in a row from the second into the fifth, not allowing a hit until Conor Gillaspie's double in the inning. An error by Matt Cline then opened the door for Wichita State, as an inning ending fielder's choice resulted in two runs instead, before a two-run double by Matt Brown made it 5-4. It was all Jose Hernandez early for the Dirtbags. Hernandez' two-run double in the second gave LBSU a 3-0 lead, after LBSU loaded the bases off of four-straight hits. A two-out RBI single from Cline then made it 4-0. Kris Johnson was chased from the game after one and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on six hits. Hernandez threw out Derek Schermerhorn at the plate following a flyball in the first, after Worley put runners on the corners with no outs. The Shockers returned the favor in the bottom of the second, as Sean Boatright was thrown out after over running third base following a looping single to right. Then LBSU broke the game open with four runs. Senior Chuck Sindlinger made his first start, let alone inning, at shortstop on Sunday, playing in his first game since February 24. Sindlinger, long known for his defense, made a nice play climbing the ladder in the fourth to end the inning on a line drive. The Dirtbags play at arch rival CS Fullerton next weekend at Goodwin Field, as part of college baseball's best rivalry. |
