Titans Edge Dirtbags 2-1 in 11 Innings
Worley Becomes Hard Luck Loser in Tight Affair

FULLERTON, CA-- Vance Worley (1-5), making his first relief appearance of the season after seven starts became the hard luck loser on Friday night as No. 4-ranked CS Fullerton (18-7) edged visiting Long Beach State (12-13) 2-1 in 11 innings.

Worley, who pitched a perfect 10th, gave up a fly ball to Blake Davis, which leftfielder Shane Peterson mis-judged and led to a leadoff double. Following a groundout which moved Davis to third, David Cooper's grounder to short was fielded by shortstop Danny Espinosa. Espinosa then fired a strike to catcher Kip Masuda, who dropped it and allowed Davis to score the winning run. Masuda had entered the game in the 10th inning.

Vinnie Pestano (1-0), who dodged trouble in the 10th and 11th innings, picked up the win with one and one third innings of relief.

LBSU had a chance to take the lead in extra innings, putting runners on at the corners with two outs in the 10th, but Robert Perry hit a grounder to second to send it further into the night. The 49ers tried again in the 11th, putting runners on first and second with two outs, only to see Peterson strikeout against Vinnie Pestano.

Jared Hughes, who pitched nine innings, threw a no-hitter into the fifth, as a one-out single up the middle by Evan MacArthur broke a string of 11 in a row retired by the righthander. Hughes then put another runner on and following a double steal, got a strikeout and then a groundout to keep LBSU up 1-0.

Hughes got a key double play ball in the eighth, and then pitched the ninth, keeping it at a 1-1 game. Hughes struck out five and walked two, giving up one run on three hits.

Wes Roemer pitched eight innings of his own for the Titans, giving up one run on three hits, striking out eight and walking none. Roemer has not walked a batter in 60 and two-thirds innings this season. Roemer retired the final 12 Dirtbags he faced following a run in the fifth.

The Dirtbags drew first blood in the fifth after a leadoff double by Brandon Godfrey. Following a sacrifice bunt, a groundout by Robert Perry gave LBSU a 1-0 lead.

Brett Pill tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth with a solo homer to left center.

Outfielder Allen Woods was injured during pre-game warmups and will be evaluated this weekend.
