Gregory Wins Big West Decathlon Title As Beach Finishes Strong In Irvine

Ryan Gregory captures Big West decathlon title as Beach closes multis competition strong.
IRVINE, Calif. -- Ryan Gregory captured the Big West decathlon championship Saturday at Anteater Stadium, leading Long Beach State to a strong finish at the Big West Multis Championships.

Gregory finished first overall with 7,816 points, the second-best mark in program history behind his own school record of 7,898 set last season. Milo Orona placed fourth with 6,881 points after two days of competition.

Gregory opened the final day with a first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, running 14.76 to earn 879 points. Orona placed sixth with a time of 16.12, collecting 719 points.

In the discus, Orona led the Beach duo with a fifth-place throw of 38.72m (127 feet, 0 inches) for 639 points, while Gregory finished sixth with a mark of 36.67m (120-3) and added 597 points.

Gregory followed with another event victory in the pole vault, clearing 4.71m (15-5 ½) to earn 822 points. Orona finished fourth after clearing 4.21m (13-9 ¾), adding 676 points.

The javelin proved to be another strong event for the Beach as Orona placed second with a throw of 60.11m (197-2) for 739 points, while Gregory took third with a mark of 54.90m (180-1) and earned 661 points.

Gregory closed the meet with another first-place finish in the 1,500 meters, crossing in 4:25.03 for 778 points. Orona placed sixth in the event with a time of 5:02.58, earning 545 points.

The Beach will now shift its focus to hosting the Big West Championships at Jack Rose Track, a three-day meet scheduled for May 14-16.
