Beach Men Claim Challenge Cup Title; Women Take Second, Gregory Shines In Multis

Long Beach State’s men captured the team title while the women finished runner-up at the 32nd Challenge Cup, as the Beach also saw a strong finish from Ryan Gregory in the decathlon at the Bryan Clay Multis.
FULLERTON, Calif. — The Long Beach State men's and women's track and field teams delivered another strong showing at the 32nd Challenge Cup, with the men claiming the team title and the women finishing second in a tightly contested meet.
The Beach men continued their dominance in the meet's history, winning their fifth consecutive team title and 25th overall with 152 points, ahead of California State University, Fullerton (125). The Long Beach State women placed second with 163 points, just behind University of California, Santa Barbara (169).
MEN
The Beach recorded seven event victories, and a relay win en route to the team's championship, highlighted by a dominant performance in the throwing events.
Eman Goodloe led the way with a first-place finish in the hammer throw, posting a mark of 63.71 meters (209 feet) to move into 10th all-time in program history. Tyler Knowles followed closely with a second-place throw of 63.24 meters (207 feet, 5 inches).
Matthew Bender captured the javelin title with a throw of 63.73 meters (209 feet, 1 inch), while VJ Vanderlipe won the pole vault after clearing 5.05 meters (16 feet, 6 3/4 inches).
On the track, the 4x100-meter relay team of Adren Parker, Tristyn Flores, Vincent Jones, Trey Sheron and Sebastian Lopez opened with a first-place finish in 40.51.
Terrence Whaley led a one-two finish in the 110-meter hurdles, winning in 14.19, while Cameron Simmons placed second in 14.29.
Miles Jones added another victory for the Beach in the 800 meters, crossing in 1:51.54, while Tarron Johnson placed third.
Steven Evans-Glynn won the long jump with a mark of 7.42 meters (24 feet, 4 1/4 inches) and also placed third in the high jump at 1.96 meters (6 feet, 5 inches). Miguel Orozco added a third-place finish in the long jump.
Additional podium finishes included Cameron Gill, who placed second in the 1,500 meters, Tola Spencer, who finished third in the triple jump, and Jaden Dasher, who took second in the 400-meter hurdles.
WOMEN
The Beach women produced four event victories and multiple podium finishes in a close battle for the team title.
Giszelle Hrehor won the hammer throw with a mark of 58.69 meters (192 feet, 6 inches), while Amanda Javellana placed third.
Rori Denness-Lamont captured the javelin title with a throw of 47.38 meters (155 feet, 5 inches), leading a strong showing that saw Kyra Miedecke place second and Mai Ricks finish third.
Jonelle Scott earned a victory in the pole vault, clearing 4.05 meters (13 feet, 3 1/2 inches).
On the track, Trinity Barnett won the 200 meters in 23.76 and also contributed to a second-place finish in the 4x100 relay alongside Daryana Hall, Zamaria Mack, Zariah Walker and Jaliyah Davis.
Daneira Pellum placed second in the long jump, while Amelia Gray added a runner-up finish in the triple jump.
Zamaria Mack recorded two podium finishes, placing third in the 100-meter hurdles and second in the 400-meter hurdles.
Additional scoring efforts included Alyssa Tapanes, who placed third in the 1,500 meters, and Elisa Rodriguez, who finished fourth in the 800 meters.
BRYAN CLAY MULTIS
At the Cougar Stadium, Long Beach State had two athletes competing in the men's decathlon at the Bryan Clay Multis, concluding the two-day competition Friday.
Ryan Gregory entered day two in sixth place and surged to a third-place finish overall with 7,810 points, marking the second-best total in program history behind his own school record of 7,898.
Gregory highlighted the day with a first-place finish in the javelin at 58.71 meters (192 feet, 7 inches) and closed the meet by winning the 1,500 meters in 4:26.21.
Milo Orona also completed the decathlon, finishing with 5,616 points. He recorded a third-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 55.32 meters (181 feet, 6 inches).
UP NEXT
Long Beach State will split competition next weekend, hosting the Pacific Coast Invitational and Beach Invitational at Jack Rose Track while also sending athletes on the road to the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays.
