Women’s Water Polo Wins Two Games At The Aztec Invite

The Beach powered through two East Coast programs, scoring 31 goals on the day.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Following its road game at UC San Diego, No. 8 Long Beach State stayed on the road for its final tournament, taking part in the Aztec Invite hosted by San Diego State. The Beach faced two East Coast programs, starting the day by taking control over Bucknell and winning, 19-6, followed by a top-10 matchup against No. 9 Indiana, securing an important win, 12-7.
Against the Bison, sophomore Jermonie Billingsly added a season-high four goals while freshmen Angeliki Arroyo and Emelia Rasner both added career highs, scoring hat tricks for the Beach in the win. In the cage, Charlotte Echlin played the whole game, making six saves and adding a steal.
In a top-10 showdown against No. 9 Indiana, the Beach showed consistency, displaying power on offense while holding the Hoosiers in check on defense as Polina Synytsia recorded nine saves. Elisa Portillo paced the offense with four goals in the game.
No. 8 Long Beach State 19, Bucknell 6
Long Beach State (12-9, 3-1 Big West) started the day by opening a 3-0 lead over Bucknell (11-8, 1-3 CWPA) behind goals from Lucy Miszewski, Gaby Patenaude and Angeliki Arroyo. The Bison answered late in the quarter to cut the lead and trailed the Beach after the first, 3-1.
Bucknell closed the gap early in the second with a penalty shot, but LBSU answered quickly with back-to-back goals from Chiara Amoroso and Miszewski. The Bison struck again, but a 4-0 run led by a pair of goals from both Rita Gurri and Jermonie Billingsly extended the lead, 9-3. Both teams traded goals late as freshman Emelia Rasner got one past the Bucknell defense to finish the quarter, 10-4.
The Beach extended its lead with three unanswered goals after Arroyo, Amoroso and Gurri each added another to the tally. Bucknell answered back, but a bar-in from Rasner kept Long Beach State with a cushion heading into the final quarter up, 14-5.
The Bison started the quarter strong and capitalized right away, but a strong finish by Long Beach State with a 5-0 run secured another win for the Beach, 19-6.

In the second game of the day, Portillo's individual play on the wing got Long Beach State ahead right off the sprint as Miszewski added another goal for the Beach before Indiana (13-4, 0-2 MPSF) snuck one past the defense, 2-1.
A shift of momentum in the quarter put the Hoosiers ahead for the first time in the game, scoring two more goals to lead 3-2 with 2:25 left. Portillo tied the game right away as the score remained 3-3 for the rest of the quarter.
Miszewski and Gurri put the Beach back in control early in the second, leading 5-3 with five minutes left in the period, but a goal by Indiana right after cut the margin to one. Both teams traded goals as Miszewski added her third of the game on a beautiful backhand shot as the Beach led 6-5 with 56 seconds left in the first half. Off a timeout play, Chiara Amoroso got on the board and extended the lead, 7-5 at halftime.
Amoroso continued her efficiency on offense, scoring back-to-back goals to extend the lead to 9-5 in the third. The Hoosiers kept trying until Grace Klinger got one past the Beach defense to shorten the gap, 9-6 with one quarter left.
Two quick goals by Spaniards Portillo and Daniela Quinzada controlled an early start in the fourth, 11-6. On a power play, the Hoosiers shortened the gap, and a late goal by Portillo secured another win for the Beach, 12-7.
The Beach will return home to host Cal State Fullerton for conference play at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center on March 21 at noon, with live stats provided through TheFOSH.net.
