Raud-Gumiel Leads Heptathlon; Gregory Second In Decathlon After First Day Of Multis

Raud-Gumiel is up by 180 over second place; Gregory trails by 170

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Claudine Raud-Gumiel leads the heptathlon while Ryan Gregory sits in second after the first day of the Big West Multis Friday at Jack Rose Track

HEPTATHLON
Raud-Gumiel opened the day by running the third-fastest time in school history in the 100m hurdles, 13.22, to win the race, earning 1,091 points.

Tori Plummer lowered her career-best in the 100m by 4/10's to 14.10 to come in third and record 964 points.  Jenelle Hurley lowered her career-best by nearly 3/10's to 14.23 for a sixth-place showing (946). Kendra Daniels established a personal best in the 100m hurdles to 16.81 for 618 points (16th).

In the high jump, Hurley reset her career-high when she cleared 5-8 3/4 on her first attempt to win the competition. She was rewarded with 916 points for her efforts.

Raud-Gumiel reset her career-high when she went 5-7 3/4, earning her 879 points, tying her with Hawai'i's Catherine Touchete for second. Plummer and Daniels cleared 5-4 1/4 to tie for fourth (771). For the freshman Daniels, it was a season-best mark in the high jump.

Raud-Gumiel reset her career best in the shot put with her fourth-place showing. She scored 592 points after posting a toss of 35-11 1/2.

Daniels was sixth (34-11, 571). Hurley was seventh (34-6 3/4, 564). Plummer's career-best 33-2 1/2 resulted in 537 points.

Raud-Gumiel made it 4-for-4 in new career-bests, running 24.57 to finish second in the 200m. Her time resulted in 927 points.

Hurley was seventh (25.67, 826). Plummer lowered her career best to 26.27 to place 11th for 774 points. Daniels did not complete the race and did not score.

Raud-Gumiel takes a 180-point lead into day two. She leads the defending Big West champion, Jolie Robinson, 3,489-3,309. Hurley sits in third, 237 back with a score of 3,252 points. Plummer's score of 3,409 has her in seventh. Daniels (1,960) is 16th.

DECATHLON
The competition opened with the 100m, where Aidan Turner ran a career-best 10.53 to win the race. He scored 968 points for his victory. Gregory recorded a career-best 10.63 to finish third (945) while Milo Orona broke the 11.00 barrier for the first time in the 100 at 10.96. His career-best earned him 874 points.

Gregory tied his career best in the long jump, 23-9 1/2, to win the event, scoring 874 points. Orona reset his career best in the long jump, leaping 23-0 to tie for fourth with Turner. Both earned 816 points.

Gregory threw a career-best 39-1 3/4 to finish eighth in the shot put for 602 points. Turner had the top shot put performance for the Beach, placing fourth with a toss of 43-7 3/4 (686). Orona was sixth, throwing a season-best 41-3 3/4 (642).

Gregory posted his fourth career-best of the day when he went 6-8 3/4 in the high jump. He won the contest, scoring 850 points.

Orona's career-best 6-6 1/4 resulted in a third-place tie with Hudson Shaver of UC Santa Barbara and 794 points. Turner struggled to a 5-8 3/4 for ninth and 585 points.

In the day-ending 400m, Gregory ran 49.02 for 860 points and a second-place finish. Orona's 49.89 was the third-quickest time, resulting in 820 points. Turner did not complete the race.

Gregory trails UC Santa Barbara's Brad Thomas by 170 points after five events (4,301-4,131). Orona is 359 back in third with 3,942 points. Turner is ninth (3,055).  

Saturday's action begins at noon with the decathlon. The heptathlon starts at 1 p.m.
