Beach Tennis Takes Black And Blue Rivalry Rematch To Open Big West Championship

Long Beach State advanced to the next round from San Diego with a 4-1 victory.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Long Beach State opened the 2025 Big West Championship with a 4-1 win over UC Irvine, winning a rematch of the Black and Blue Rivalry from the last match of the season.
Postmatch Interview
Long Beach State (15-5) started the day with a double point win. Cecelia Costa and Paulina Franco Martinessi were 6-2 winners over Haily Huynh and Kayla Meraz in the top flight, while Daria Malaescu and Diana De Simone clinched the point with another 6-2 win over Maily Huynh and Amanda Perez.
Frehsman Thea Jagare quickly picked up another point for the Beach, Jagare, who was leading in her doubles match when play was halted, closed out her singles win quickly with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Amanda Perez in the third flight.
UC Irvine (10-13) recovered to push the remaining matches into third sets. Yen Nhi Huynh held off Daria Malaescu 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to get the first point for the Anteaters, while Pamela Badillo pulled the Beach within one point of the victory with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 win over Haily Huynh in the fifth flight.
Cecila Costa rallied in the second flight to clinch the match, winning a 7-2 tiebreaker in the third to finish off a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (2) win and close the match with a 4-1 win. De Simone and Daisy Carpenter's matches remained unfinished in the third and final set.
