Malaescu Secures Singles Point as Gauchos Take 6-1 Decision
Santa Barbara, Calif. -- No. 64 Long Beach State dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 49 UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday at the Arnhold Tennis Center, falling to 11-9 on the season against a higher-ranked Gauchos squad.
The Beach opened the afternoon by claiming a doubles victory at the top spot, as Cecilia Costa and Paulina Martinessi delivered a strong 6-2 win. However, UC Santa Barbara responded by taking the remaining two doubles courts convincingly, securing the opening point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
In singles play, the Gauchos quickly took control, winning five of the six matches to put the contest out of reach. UC Santa Barbara picked up straight-set victories on courts No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5, while also earning a decisive win at No. 1 after a competitive opening set.
Long Beach State's lone point came from Daria Malaescu at No. 6 singles, where she turned in a composed performance and earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory to prevent the sweep.
The most tightly contested match of the day came at No. 2 singles, where Diana De Simone battled back after dropping the first set to force a third, but ultimately fell 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in a back-and-forth finish.
