FIRST PITCH
Long Beach State returns to Big West action this weekend as the Dirtbags host CSUN. Friday and Saturday's games begin at 6 p.m. Sunday's finale is a 1 p.m. start. ESPN+ streams Saturday and Sunday's games with Matt Brown and Cody Yates on the call.
 
SCOUTING THE MATADORS
CSUN is 8-27 after being swept by No. 3 Oregon State last weekend in Northridge. The Matadors return to Big West action with a 4-14 conference record.
 
Roberto Gonzales is CSUN's top hitter at a .336 clip. He leads the team in slugging (.551), on-base percentage (.463), hits (36), and stolen bases (8). The Matadors feature three players who have hit six home runs: Jarren Sanderson, Matthew Pena, and Andrew Gauna. Andrew Becker has posted a club-best 24 RBI.
 
Friday's probable starter is Ryan Halamicek. Halamicek has started 10 times this season, going 2-4 with an 8.41 ERA in a team-high 55.2 innings. He has struck out 44 and walked 16.
 
Diego Gutierrez is Saturday's probable starter. He is 2-4 in 10 starts with a 7.20 ERA. He has struck out a team-best 52 while walking 30.
 
Max Mendes is scheduled to start on Sunday. He has started six times in 13 appearances. Mendes is 2-4 with a 9.39 ERA, striking out 21 in 30.2 innings. He has walked 27.
 
Long Beach State leads the all-time series 87-74-1.
 
ROBLEZ'S TOP PERFORMANCES
Albert Roblez has turned in two of the season's top Long Beach State pitching performances over the past three weeks.
Roblez entered the game against Cal State Bakersfield with one out in the top of the third on Apr. 12 and retired all 20 batters he faced. Roblez struck out a season-high 12 against the 'Runners. He threw 84 pitches, 62 for strikes, improving to 3-0 this season.
 
At Hawai'i on Apr. 5, Roblez picked up his second win of the season with 5.1 innings of relief. Roblez entered in the fourth inning and retired the first 12 batters he faced. He struck out the side in two innings, striking out eight of 10 batters at one point. He walked two and gave up one hit, throwing a season-high 94 pitches, 58 for strikes.
 
Roblez has moved to third in Division I this week in hits allowed per nine innings (4.67) and eighth in strikeouts per nine innings (14.02). He is 47th in WHIP (1.01), while his 54 strikeouts are 86th in D-1 this week.
 
He currently leads the Dirtbags in ERA (3.12), saves (3) and strikeouts. At 3-0, he is third on the team in victories. Opponents are hitting .154 against him in 2025.
