Long Beach State ties its season-high with 14 hits and smacks three home runs
LONG BEACH, Calif.-- Long Beach State tied its season-high for most hits in a game 14, including three home runs, as the Dirtbags outslugged CSUN 13-7 in Big West baseball play Friday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
The Matadors took a 2-0 lead with one out in the top of the second on Cameron Calvillo's third home run.
Nathan Cadena cut the lead in half when he recorded his fourth home run of the year to lead off the bottom of the second. With two outs, former Matador Conner Stewart put the Dirtbags into the lead with a two-run home run over the old fences in left field.
Kellan Montgomery, LBSU's starter, hit Roberto Gonzalez to begin the top of the third. Trent Abel singled through the left side. Montgomery struck out Andrew Becker. Cleanup hitter Andrew Gauna singled up the middle to score Gonzalez and tie the score. Jarren Sanderson returned the advantage to CSUN with a single through the left side that plated Abel. Kyle Panganiban flew out to left for the second out. Calvillo went down in the count 1-2 before singling through the left side to drive in the third run of the inning. Will Linberg fouled out to third to end the inning.
Connor Charpiot began the LBSU fourth with an opposite-field single to right. With one out, Stewart converted a hit-and-run chance with a single through the right side, sending Charpiot to third. Freshman Jake Evans hit his first collegiate home run off the left field foul pole to put the Dirtbags up by one.
Cadena doubled with one out in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Charpiot hit a high fly down the left field line that fell between two Matadors, allowing Cadena to score.
Montgomery retired nine in a row before issuing a two-out walk to Linberg in the top of the sixth. Xavier Rios singled to left to turn the lineup over and bring up Gonzalez, the leadoff hitter. He flew out to left for the final out.
Stewart led off the sixth with a walk. With one out, the hit-and-run was on again for Long Beach State as Champagne's opposite-field double down the left field line advanced to the Stewart to third. With pinch-hitter Matt Toomey coming up, CSUN called in Hayden Hall to take over. With the infield in, Toomey tripled to right center to drive in both runners, putting LBSU up 9-5. The infield remained in against Kyle Ashworth, the Dirtbags' leading hitter was plunked by a 3-2 Hall fastball.
Cadena hit a short fly in left that dropped in. Toomey scored easily. Ashworth took off with the pitch and scored from first. Elliot singled to right, sending Cadena to third as he took second on the throw. Charpiot doubled to the centerfield warning track to score both. The Matadors went to the bullpen once again, calling upon Jason Davis. Luke Taylor lined out to left before Stewart reached on an error. Evans lined out to end the frame.
Pinch-hitter Matthew Pena doubled with two outs in the top of the eighth to score Linberg. Gonzalez singled home Pena for what proved to be the final 13-7 score.
Cadena and Charpiot both recorded three hits to lead the Dirtbags. Cadena scored three times and drove in three runs. Charpiot tallied three RBI. Stewart was 2-for-4 with his home run, two RBI, and three runs scored. Champagne charted two hits. Calvillo was 2-for-4 with three RBI to pace the Matadors.
Kellan Montgomery improved to 8-3 on the year as he tossed the first six innings, striking out six. Alex Ramos pitched the seventh before Josh Donegan pitched the final two innings. The trio combined for 10 strikeouts.
Long Beach State (16-22, 10-12 Big West) and CSUN (8-28, 4-15 Big West) continue the series Saturday. ESPN+ coverage begins at 6 p.m.
