Champagne goes 2-for-4; Larson throws five innings of shutout relief

LONG BEACH, Calif.—CSUN defeated Long Beach State 6-0 in Big West baseball action Saturday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.

A two-out Matadors' rally in the top of the first resulted in an Andrew Gauna RBI double and a Cameron Calvillo single that drove in Gauna. Gauna struck again with two outs in the second with a single up the middle that scored a run.

Kyle Panganiban made it 4-0 with a one-out third-inning home run. Xavier's two-RBI double in the top of the fifth increased the Matadors' advantage.

Thanks to a first-inning double play after an Alex Champagne base hit, CSUN's Jon Mocherman retired the minimum through the first four innings. In a pre-planned bullpen game, the Matadors went to Ryan Halamicek, who started the 10 previous Saturdays for CSUN, to begin the bottom of the fifth. He gave up a Nathan Cadena single and walked Conner Charpiot. Matt Toomey flew out deep enough to center to advance Cadena to third. Mocherman struck out Luke Taylor before getting Easton Elliot to fly out to left to keep the game 6-0.

Van Larson retired the first 10 CSUN batters he faced before Trent Abel reached on an error with two outs in the top of the eighth. He stole second before Andrew Becker flew out to second to end the inning.

Conner Stewart reached on a CSUN error with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Champagne singled up the middle before Halamicek's wild pitch advanced both runners up a base. Jake Evans walked to load the bases. Kyle Ashworth lined out to second for the second out. Cadena lined out to right for the final out.

Toomey singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth. One out later, Halamicek hit Elliot. Stewart flew out to right field to end the game.

Gauna, Calvillo, Panganbian, and Rios combined for eight of the 10 CSUN hits (two each). Mocherman and Halamicek combined on a six-hitter and eight strikeouts. The duo recorded the first shutout in the series against LBSU since May 20, 2011, when CSUN defeated the Dirtbags 2-0.

Larson gave up one hit in five innings of relief. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. Champagne went 2-for-4 on the night.

Long Beach State (16-23, 10-13 Big West) and CSUN (9-28, 5-15 Big West) conclude the series Sunday afternoon. ESPN+ coverage begins at 1 p.m.
