Jake Evans records two of the four Dirtbags' hits
The Trojans took a 1-0 first-inning lead when Abbrie Covarrubias singled through the left side with two outs.
Kevin Takeuchi led off the top of the fourth with a double down the left field line. Dean Carpentier singled up the middle to send Takeuchi to third. Ka'imi Kahalekai, the third LBSU pitcher of the game, hit Richard Tejeda, who was attempting to bunt to load the bases. Brayden Dowd walked for the second run. Ethan Hedges, USC's leading hitter, recorded an opposite-field double down the right field line to score two runs.
The Dirtbags brought the infield in against Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek, who grounded out to second as both runners held on their base. Long Beach State kept the infield in against former Dirtbag Adrian Lopez. Down 1-2, Lopez hit a shot off the glove of Dylan Jackson, the LBSU first baseman. The ball ended in right field, driving in both runners for a 6-0 score. Alex Ramos entered for Long Beach State, and he struck out Covarrubias. Maximo Martinez flew out to the warning track in left, where Reid Montgomery made the catch to end the inning.
USC starter Grant Govel retired the first nine Long Beach State batters he faced before Kyle Ashworth singled up the middle to begin the bottom of the fourth. Govel walked Alex Champagne before hitting Nathan Cadena to load the bases. Easton Elliot hit into a 4-3 double play as Ashworth scored. Luke Taylor's opposite-field double to right drove in Champagne. Govel struck out Montgomery for the final out.
Andrew Johnson relieved Govel to begin the bottom of the first. With one out, Jake Evans singled to right, moving to second when Jackson was walked. Ashworth struck out looking on 3-2 Johnson breaking ball. Champagne flew out to Dowd in center to keep the score 6-2.
Hedges tripled to the right-center gap to begin the sixth. With the infield in, Martin-Grudzielanek flew to center. Hedges tagged. Champagne's throw was strong enough that Hedges retreated to third. Ramos struck out Lopez for the second out. Covarrubias lined out to a diving Montgomery in left to conclude matters.
Basseer hit a one-out home run in the top of the seventh to add to the USC advantage. Jackson Baker became the third pitcher of the game for the Trojans. The Dirtbags put a pair of runners on with two outs when USC went to the bullpen again, calling in Brodie Purcell to take over. He faced Ashworth, who walked to load the bases. Champagne grounded out to first for the third out.
The Trojans batted around in the top of the ninth, scoring five runs.
Hedges led USC (26-14) by going 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Evans had two of the four Long Beach State hits. Jackson walked in each of his final three plate appearances. The five USC pitchers struck out 14, including five of the final seven batters the Trojans faced.
This weekend, Long Beach State (15-22, 9-12 Big West) hosts CSUN (8-27, 4-14 Big West). The series begins Friday at 6 p.m.
