The Mustangs are ranked No. 38 as the Beach defeated Cal Poly 5-2.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – A comeback win in the top flight for doubles set the tone for Long Beach State, who once again showed their resilience on the way to a 5-2 win over Cal Poly Saturday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
Cal Poly (9-3, 2-1 Big West) entered Saturday ranked No. 38 in the ITA Rankings, and had won six straight including their first two Big West matches of the year against UC Davis and UC Riverside. The young Long Beach State (8-2, 2-1 Big West) squad also entered Saturday riding a high and prevailed to keep their winning streak going, now seven matches strong.
"Today was a big conference win for us over a veteran, nationally ranked squad," said head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "I'm really happy with the development of our freshmen. We showed our talent level and our fight on the court today."
A quick split in the first two doubles matches turned the attention to the top flight to start the day. Diana De Simone and Daria Malaesu were 6-2 winners in the third flight, while Peyton Dunkle and Amy Leather of Cal Poly took flight two against Thea Jagare and Paulina Franco to leave the last doubles match as the decider.
After losing the first three games, Cecilia Costa and Johanna Hiesmair responded by taking the next five games on the way to a 6-4 victory to take the doubles point and establish the day's momentum in favor of the Beach.
Pamela Badillo kept things going with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over Jessica MacCallum in the fifth flight to establish a 2-0 lead for Long Beach State in the match. Cecilia Costa continued her strong play with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Dunkle at the twos to give the Beach a 3-0 lead, and despite two losses, the Beach closed out the win as Daisy Carpenter won in straight sets against Natalie Lynch, 7-5, 7-5. Daria Malaescu was also a double winner on the day, following up her doubles win with a three set, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win over Alexandra Ozerets to finish off the 5-2 win for Long Beach State.
Beach Tennis continues their homestand after a one-week break, hosting three home matches in four days starting with a non-conference matchup with Drake on Tuesday, March 18.
