Women’s Tennis Opens Week With Dominating Win Over Drake

No. 53 Long Beach State extends their winning streak to nine straight matches.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – On a beautiful day at the Rhodes Tennis Center, Beach Tennis made quick work of Drake, grabbing a 4-0 win over the Bulldogs behind strength from the top of the lineup.
No. 53 Long Beach State (9-2) began the day with a doubles point victory. Cecilia Costa and Johanna Hiesmair continued their excellent play at the top of the doubles lineup with a 6-4 win, and Diana De Simone and Daria Malaescu, shifting into the third flight, were 6-2 winners over Jana Ruzic and Shiori Takeda to take the first point of the day.
Transitioning into singles, Long Beach State picked up two quick wins in the top two flights. Costa was finished first, breezing past Jessica Popiol 6-2, 6-1, while De Simone quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the top flight over Elizabete Klavinska.
Pamela Badillo opened up a 5-0 lead in the first set, and clinched her match and the win over Drake (3-8) with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ruzic, stopping the match in just under two hours.
The win over Drake came in what was the first of three matches this week for Long Beach State in a busy week at the Rhodes Tennis Center. Long Beach State will host Hawai'i for a Big West conference matchup on Thursday at 2 p.m., and then close the week with another non-conference matchup Friday against Dartmouth, also at 2 p.m.
