Cecilia Costa, Thea Jagare both had singles wins but the Rainbow Wahine got just enough to end the Long Beach State winning streak at eight straight matches.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Tennis finally had their winning streak come to an end as Hawai'i held off the Beach 5-2 as the team returned to Big West competition on Thursday. The loss to the Rainbow Wahine saw the Beach slip to 9-3 on the season, ending their winning streak at eight straight matches.
Hawai'i (7-5, 4-1 Big West) got an early edge by winning the doubles point. Sheena Masuda and Peppi Ramstedt were 6-3 winners in the top flight for Hawai'i, but Long Beach State (9-3, 2-2 Big West) bounced back quickly with a 62- win by Thea Jagare and Pamela Badillo over Hannah Galindo and Makeilah Nepomuceno. UH would take the point with a second flight win from Nikola Homolkova and Ana Vilcek.
Jagare, after her doubles win, kept the momentum going for the Beach as the odd flights all got off to great starts. Jagare was a 6-1 winner over Homolkova and cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win, while Diana De Simone took a 6-0 win over Ana Vilcek and Pamela Badillo was a set one winner as well.
Hawai'i was able to pull back the momentum with a 6-4, 6-1 win from Emma Forgac over Daria Malaescu to push the match lead back to 2-1, and second set wins from both Vilcek and Nepomuceno against Badillo kept the action going. Both of those 'Bows would take their third sets, ultimately sealing the win for Hawai'i. Daisy Carpenter had the fifth match to conclude, a 7-6, 6-3 defeat in the sixth flight.
Cecila Costa won an epic second set tiebreak, 12-10, to extend her match with Ramstedt, who was unable to continue in a victory for the Brazilian freshman.
After splitting their first two matches in the week, Long Beach State will play one more Friday, hosing Dartmouth in a non-conference match beginning at 2 p.m. from the Rhodes Tennis Center.
