Charpiot and Champagne both record three hits to lead LBSU

IRVINE, Calif.—Long Beach State scored eight runs in the first two innings as the Dirtbags held off No. 18/25 UC Irvine 10-8.

Opposite field singles from Kyle Ashworth, Alex Champagne, and Connor Charpiot recorded opposite-field singles to load the bases with one out in the top of the first. After falling behind Danny Suarez 0-2, Dylan Lina worked the count to 3-2 before doubling to left to drive in Ashworth and Champagne. With the count 1-1 on Matt Toomey, Danny Suarez's wild pitch allowed Charpiot to score.

Kellan Montgomery walked Colin Yeaman with one out in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Chase Call reached on an infield single. Anthony Martinez's opposite-field single through the left side scored Yeaman. Rowan Felsh popped out to third to end the inning.

Armando Briseno singled up the middle to begin the top of the second. Suarez issued back-to-back walks to Efren Ortega and Ashworth to load the bases. Suarez struck out Nathan Cadena before walking Champagne to bring Briseno home. Finnegan Wall relieved Suarez. Charpiot singled to center to plate Ortega and Ashworth. Lina ran the count to count 3-2.

After fouling off a pair of pitches, he walked to load the bases. Toomey's opposite-field single through the left side resulted in Champagne scoring. Charpiot scored again on a wild pitch for an 8-1 score.  The Anteaters brought the infield in against Luke Taylor, who was hit by a Wall pitch. Wall struck out Brisenio on a 3-2 pitch before getting Ortega to foul out for the third out.

Montgomery retired six in a row before Jacob McCombs singled with two outs in the bottom of the third. Call's double down the left field line to bring up Martinez.  Martinez's single to left center drove in both runners.
The first two Long Beach State batters reached in the top of the fifth thanks to a UCI error. Charpiot's third hit of the night resulted in his third RBI and a 9-3 lead for the Dirtbags.

Martinez led off the bottom of the sixth with a single to center. With one out, James Castagnola reached on an infield single, and Martinez moved to second. Zach Fjelstad singled through the left side to score Martinez. Montgomery hit Zach Crandall to load the bases. Will Bermudez singled down the left field line to make it 9-6. Yeaman singled up the middle to cut the LBSU lead to two.

Tyler Gebb relieved Montgomery. His first batter was McCombs, who flew out to leave. Gebb walked Call to load the bases. Martinez returned to the plate. Gebb struck him out on four pitches.

Champagne's single opened the top of the seventh. Lina reached on a one-out hit by pitch. Toomey hit a grounder to Yeaman at short. He tagged the bag at second, but his throw on the double play attempt went into the LBSU dugout. Both base runners were awarded a base, allowing Champagne to score.

Albert Roblez, beginning his third inning of relief, hit Call to begin the bottom of the ninth. Martinez flew to left center for the first out. Roblez struck out Frankie Carney, looking to pick up number two. Castagnola singled to right center, sending Call to third and bringing the tying run up in Fjelstad. The UCI third baseman fell behind 1-2 in the count before hitting a single through the right side, scoring Call. Pinch-hitter Theo Kim fouled out to left to end the game.
