Dirtbags Fall On The Road to Fresno State

Long Beach State carried early momentum before Fresno State answered in the middle innings.
FRESNO, Calif. — Long Beach State (8-16, 3-6 Big West) continued to create opportunities throughout Monday night's non-conference matchup, with Trevor Goldenetz collecting three hits, but the Fresno State Bulldogs (8-14, 0-3 Mountain West) pulled away for an 8-1 decision at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Long Beach State pressured early when Goldenetz opened the game with a single to shallow right, stole second, then moved to third on a foul out to right by Smith Chandler. A walk to Trotter Enright and a hit-by-pitch to Dylan Lina loaded the bases, but Fresno State worked out of the inning. Goldenetz later added two more singles and finished 3-5 to lead the Dirtbags offensively.
Freshman right-hander Jaxon Baker kept Fresno State quiet through the first two innings, striking out three and not allowing a hit, but the Bulldogs changed the game in the third after a Dirtbags pitching change put Ka'imi Kahalekai on the mound. A leadoff walk and single put two aboard before Mikey Boyd drove a three-run home run to deep right field. Fresno State added another run later in the inning on a sacrifice fly to take a 4-0 lead.
After Fresno State built a 4-0 lead in the third, the Bulldogs added to the margin in the fifth when a hit batter and walk put two aboard before a three-run home run extended the score to 7-0.
Joey Iglesias helped settle the game in the middle innings, working through two scoreless frames after inheriting traffic in the third. He stranded three runners in the fourth, using a strikeout and an infield fly to keep Fresno State from extending the lead.
The Dirtbags broke through in the sixth after Camden Gasser was hit by a pitch with two outs and Trevor Goldenetz followed with a single to shallow left, moving Gasser to third. A full-count walk to Smith Chandler loaded the bases before Trotter Enright drew a four-pitch walk that forced Gasser home for Long Beach State's lone run. trimming the deficit to 7-1.
The Bulldogs added one final run in the eighth on a solo homer from Brady Hewitt, for an 8-1 final score.
Goldenetz finished 3- 5 to lead Long Beach State's six-hit effort, while Enright added an RBI and three walks. Perez and Reid Montgomery also recorded hits. On the mound, Baker struck out three in two scoreless innings to start, while Mason Tymick and Tyler Gebb each delivered scoreless relief appearances late.
Long Beach State turns its attention back to The Big West play this weekend, opening a three-game series against UC Irvine Anteaters baseball on Friday. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. and the game will stream on ESPN+.
