Long Beach State scored seven fifth-inning runs in Friday’s rivalry win.
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State ( 9-16, 4-6 Big West) turned patience at the plate into its biggest inning of the season Friday night, breaking open a tight game with seven runs in the fifth to defeat UC Irvine (9-16, 1-6 Big West) 10-2 at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field and hand the Anteaters their tenth straight loss.Â
The Dirtbags entered the night looking to respond after Monday's midweek loss at Fresno State, but early on it was UC Irvine starter Trevor Hansen who controlled the tempo. Hansen carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning, working around two third-inning baserunners after Ty Borgogno was hit by a pitch and Trevor Goldenetz drew a walk with two outs. Long Beach State could not capitalize then, as Smith Chandler struck out to end the inning.
Defensively, the Dirtbags kept the game close early. Smith Chandler opened the second inning by taking away extra bases with a diving catch in left field, helping Caleb Anderson settle in after Auggie Gutierrez reached on a hit-by-pitch later in the frame. Anderson worked out of trouble again in the third, though UC Irvine broke through when Zach Crandall singled, Tommy Farmer IV walked and Alonso Reyes delivered a two-out RBI single for a 1-0 lead.
Long Beach State responded in the fourth when Dylan Lina and Trotter Enright each drew walks, continuing Hansen's growing pitch count. Luke Taylor then delivered the Dirtbags' first hit of the night, a single that scored Lina from second and moved Enright to third. A wild pitch pushed Taylor into scoring position, but Hansen stranded two runners to keep the game tied at 1-1.
The game shifted completely an inning later.
Borgogno opened the fifth with a walk before Goldenetz singled to shallow right, sending the go-ahead run to third. Chandler followed with an infield single that slipped through the left side, scoring Borgogno and giving Long Beach State its first lead. Jake Evans then dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position, and after Lina was hit by a pitch, Enright grounded out to bring home another run.
Still with two outs, the inning only gained momentum. Taylor worked a walk to reload the bases, and Toomey lined a single to shallow right that scored Chandler and Lina while forcing UC Irvine to the bullpen. Peyton Rodgers entered, but a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position before Conner Stewart was hit by a pitch to fill the bases again. Borgogno followed with a two-run single to shallow right, Goldenetz added an RBI single to right, and by the time the inning ended, Long Beach State had scored seven runs, its highest-scoring inning of the season, for an 8-1 advantage.
The Dirtbags kept that momentum immediately on the mound, retiring UC Irvine in order in the sixth behind Tyler Gebb, who entered after Anderson completed five innings. Anderson earned his first win of the season after allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts across five innings. Gebb followed with two scoreless innings before Jaxon Baker handled the final two frames.
Long Beach State added two more runs in the eighth when Chandler was hit by a pitch, and Lina drove a two-run homer deep to left, his sixth of the season. UC Irvine scored once in the ninth on Zach Crandall's RBI single, but Baker closed the door to secure the series-opening win.
Goldenetz finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Borgogno reached base three times and drove in two runs. Toomey and Lina each added two RBIs as Long Beach State improved to 9-16 overall and 4-6 in Big West play.
The Dirtbags will now shift their focus to game two of the series against the Anteaters, first pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
