Avery Weisbrook’s two-run home run led the Beach to a game two win after the bats got going late in the opener.
DAVIS, Calif. – Long Beach State went on the road and grabbed two wins at UC Davis, getting clutch hitting throughout the lineup in support of two solid starts in the circle from senior Eryka Gonzales and sophomore Kate Barnett.
Jacquelyn Bickar gave Long Beach State (17-12, 7-4 Big West) an early lead in the contest, hitting a solo home run in the top of the first inning. That would be the only scoring of note for a good portion of the contest, as Eryka Gonzales pitched four scoreless innings in her second start of the season, while Carolyn Grimes held the Beach off the board for the remainder of the first six innings with the exception of the Bickar bomb for UC Davis (11-22, 5-6 Big West).
Turning the ball over to Lindsey Cowans in the circle, the senior worked a clean fifth inning but the Aggies were able to tie the game in the sixth. After a walk, a wild pitch moved Sophia Eftekhari to second and a single from Mickey Buscemi tied the game at 1-1.
Long Beach State quickly answered back in a big way in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back errors put two on for the Beach, and LBSU made the Aggies pay in a big way for the mistakes. Makayla Medellin doubled to score both runners to put the Beach back in front, and a single from Brooklyn Lee added one more to make it 4-1. Two more singles from Corissa Sweet and Priscilla Iniguez loaded the bases, and after an RBI groundout, a double from Avery Weisbrook pushed the lead up to 7-1.
Cowans would surrender one run after an RBI double from Naomi Kalentera, but finished off the win as the Beach took the opening game 7-2.
Kate Barnett went the distance for Long Beach State in game two, lowering her league-leading ERA with just one run allowed while striking out three in a 3-1 win in game two. Neither team broke through over the first three innings, but the Beach broke the deadlock in the fourth.
Freshman Priscilla Iniguez kicked off a two-out rally for the Beach in the fourth inning with a single, and then Avery Weisbrook turned on a liner to left field, putting the Beach on top 2-0. UC Davis answered back as Gia Felice started the bottom half of the fourth with a triple, coming home on an RBI single from Kayla Macias.
Barnett worked around a jam in the sixth with a critical strikeout of Rylee Reeves with bases loaded with one out as Bickar snared a liner to end the inning, and the Beach grabbed an insurance run in the seventh. With two outs, the Beach extended the inning with an error, and then Lina Apodaca again made UC Davis pay for a miscue with an RBI double. Barnett then set down the Aggies in order in the bottom half to improve to 4-2 on the year as the Beach clinched the road series victory with the 3-1 win.
The series will finish with one more game Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. with live coverage on ESPN+.
