Gregory Finishes Second In The Decathlon At The Texas Relays

Lavreshina runs the fourth fastest LBSU women's 400m hurdles time
AUSTIN, Texas—Ryan Gregory finished second in the decathlon on Thursday, the end of day two for the Long Beach State track and field teams at the 97th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays presented by Truist with the multi-events.
DECATHLON
The day began with the 110m hurdles, in which Aidan Turner charted LBSU's top performance. He finished fifth in a time of 14.81, scoring 876 points, a career-best for Turner.
Gregory scored 851 points as he ran 14.99 to place 10th. Milo Orona's 737-point score came via his time of 15.96.
Turner threw a career-best 132-8 in the discus to place second in the event and earn 674 points. Orona threw the discus 130-8 to earn 661 points, which allowed him to finish fifth. Gregory's 121-0 gave him 602 points and placed him ninth.
In the pole vault, Turner and Gregory both cleared 14-11 to score 775 points. Gregory was credited with fifth place. Turner was given third as it took fewer attempts to make 14-11. Orona went 13-3 1/2 (601) to finish 15th.
After a weather delay, the competition resumed with the javelin, where Gregory came in fourth with a throw of 178-1 (652). Orona's 172-4 scored 626 points as he placed sixth. Turner was 17th (103-9, 322).
Entering the final event, the 1500m, Gregory was tied for second with Connecticut's Joshua Mooney as both sat 30 points out of Max Stakun-Pickering's lead (6,858). Gregory outplaced Stakun-Pickering by three positions, finishing fourth in the 1500m at 4:32.44. Stakun-Pickering's 4:34.73 was enough to edge Gregory by 15 points (7572-7557) to win the title. Gregory's score is the third-highest in school history.
Orona finished 10th in the decathlon after running 4:40.40 to score 678 points. His 7,185 points are a new career best and the eighth-most in school history.
Turner's 5:16.49 was 16th for 468 points. He finished 14th with a new collegiate best of 6,792 points.
HEPTATHLON
Claudine Raud-Gumiel and Jenelle Hurley opened the day by each posting 680 points in the long jump after both went 17-9 3/4. For Hurley, the mark was a season-best long jump. Both tied for sixth in the event.
Hurley's 112-5 in the javelin scored 558 points, resulting in a fifth-place showing. Raud-Gumiel was 14th in the javelin (432, 163).
Hurley and Raud-Gumiel did not start the 800. Hurley's 4,282 points were the 13th most in the competition. Raud-Gumiel ended with 4,098 points and 14th overall.
WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
Sofia Lavreshina qualified for the finals of the 400m hurdles (Univ./College) by running the fourth-fastest time in school history, 58.13. She is seeded seventh for Friday's (3:35 p.m. PDT) finals.
MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
In the javelin "B" competition, Elliott Payne earned the runner-up slot as he recorded a throw of 192-7 on his final attempt of the day.
Micah Norfles qualified for the men's hammer throw finals with a toss of 201-11. Norfles could not improve upon his first throw of the day and finished ninth.
Tyler Knowles posted a best 175-1 in the hammer throw preliminaries but did not advance to the finals.
Omri Shiff just missed qualifying for the finals of the 400m hurdles (Univ./College). He went 51.78, ranking him 10th in the preliminary field of 40. The top nine advanced, with the ninth place being 51.66 by Robin Black of the Academy of Art.
