Gauchos Hold Off Long Beach State As Homestand Comes To A Close For Women’s Tennis

In a matchup between two ranked teams, the Beach claimed the doubles point but came up just short against UCSB.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State won the doubles point and won at least one set in three singles matches, but UC Santa Barbara was able to hold off the Beach for a 5-2 win as Long Beach State's five-match homestand at the Rhodes Tennis Center came to an end.
Long Beach State (10-4, 2-3 Big West) got off to a great start with a doubles win. UC Santa Barbara (7-8, 3-0 Big West) picked up the top flight with a 6-1 win from Amelia Honer and Lucy Lu, but the Beach quickly evened the score with a 6-3 win at the third flight from Diana DeSimone and Paulina Franco Martinessi. Thea Jagare and Johanna Hiesmair, playing together for the first time this season finished off the doubles point win for the Beach, defeating Raphaelle Leroux and Marie Weissheim 6-3 to put the Beach in a good position entering singles play.
Raphaelle Leroux won in straight sets over Daria Malaescu to tie the score and the Gauchos' senior star, Honer, won 6-3, 6-1 over Diana De Simone in the top flight to put UC Santa Barbara quickly in front 2-1.
The remaining four matches were all extremely tight. Cecilia Costa just missed a third set after falling in a second set tiebreaker against Marie Weisshiem, and the remaining three matches all did go three as the decision remained in doubt. Pamela Badillo rallied for a second set win against Katarina Vayser, but fell 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 as the Gauchos clinched the match, while Jagare fell in three sets to Tyra Richardson.
Freshman Daisy Carpenter finished off her match with Emma Tutoveanu 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to snag a point for the Beach as the teams split the trio of three-set matches.
Big West play continues in the next match for Long Beach State, as the Beach will travel to face Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, March 29 at 11 a.m.
