Dirtbags Ninth Inning Rally Comes Up Short In Loss At UCSD

Ashworth Drives In Three; Champagne Scores Three
LA JOLLA, Calif.—A ninth inning Dirtbags' rally came up short as UC San Diego defeated Long Beach State 7-4 in the Big West baseball series opener Friday night at Triton Ballpark.
The Tritons took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Gabe Camacho's two-out, two-run home run. UC San Diego loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the second. LBSU starter Albert Roblez struck out Noah Lazuka to end the threat.
Long Beach State got on the board in the top of the third. Alex Champagne led off the inning with a single up the middle. He stole second and went to third on a Nathan Cadena sacrifice bunt. Kyle Ashworth's grounder to second plated Champagne.
Michael Crossland opened the bottom of the third with a walk. Camacho singled to right center to advance Crossland to third. J.C. Allen popped out to short before Roblez struck out Trevian Martinez. Patrick Hackworth walked to load the bases. Emiliano Gonzalez worked the count to 3-2 before flying out to Ashworth in right for the final out.
Dylan Lina's single to left began the top of the fourth. With one out, Matt Toomey singled through the right side to give the Dirtbags runners on first and second. UCSD starter Matthew Dalquist struck out Jake Evans. Conner Stewart flew out to right to end the inning.
A Dalquist pitch hit Champagne to begin the fifth. With one out, Ashworth's opposite-field double down the left field line drove in Champagne to tie the score. Dalquist walked Armando Briseno before striking out Lina to get the second out. Charpiot flew out to right field for the final out.
Roblez gave way to Alex Ramos to start the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Camacho walked. Allen's blooper to center resulted in runners on first and second. Ramos hit Martinez to load the bases. Hackworth grounded into a 4-6 fielder's choice, which allowed Camacho to return the lead to the Tritons. With runners on the corners, Hackworth scored on a failed Ramos pickoff attempt, and Allen took second in the play. Gonzalez broke the game open with a two-run home run off a 3-2 Ramos fastball.
Toomey singled to begin the sixth for the Dirtbags. Evans followed with a single of his own. Stewart failed at his sacrifice bunt attempt, as he struck out attempting to bunt with two strikes. Champagne flew out to left center before Dalquist struck out Cardena, looking on a 3-2 pitch to wrap up the frame. The Tritons added one in the bottom of the seventh as Gonzalez singled in a run with two outs.
Sam Hasegawa relieved Dalquist to start the seventh, retiring the Dirtbags in order for the first time. Connor Charpiot reached on an infield single to begin the eighth. With one out, Evans hit a come-backer to Hasegawa on the mound. He attempted to throw out Charpiot at second after he advanced on a passed ball. Charpiot returned in time to give Long Beach State runners on first and second. Stewart hit into a 6-4-3 double play to keep LBSU at bay.
Champagne kicked the ninth off with a triple to left. A one-out Ashworth double to the left center gap scored Champagne for the third time. Briseno singled through the right side to give the Dirtbags runners on the corners. Lina singled right to plate Ashworth, cutting the lead to 7-4. Charpiot popped out to second for the second out. Pinch-hitter Zech Samayoa struck out to end the game.
Long Beach State outhit the Tritons 12-8, with five Dirtbags recording two hits each. Ashworth had three RBI while Champagne had three runs scored.
The series between Long Beach State (7-14, 1-6 Big West) and UCSD (12-8, 3-4 Big West) continues Saturday with coverage on ESPN+ beginning at 2 p.m.
