Lina and Cadena hit home runs for Long Beach State
LA JOLLA, Calif.---Trailing by nine in the eighth inning, Long Beach State fought back, but UC San Diego outlasted Long Beach State 13-10 Saturday afternoon at Triton Ballpark.
Alex Champagne led off the game with an opposite-field single to left. With the count 0-2 to Matt Toomey, Champagne stole second. After Toomey struck out, Kyle Ashworth walked. Armando Briseno hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
The Tritons took the lead when Michael Crossland hit a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the first. Nathan Cadena tied the score in the top of the second with a one-out solo blast to left center field.
With two outs, Jake Evans doubled to the gap in left-center. Efren Cadena's infield single to short earned the Dirtbags runners on the corners. Chapman Weber relieved starter Nic Gregson, with Champagne coming to bat. Weber walked Champagne to load the bases. Weber and Toomey battled to a seven-pitch at-bat before Toomey flew out to center for the final out.
J.C. Allen began the UCSD second with a double to left. Colton Lomanto followed with a two-run home run to right field. With one out, Delshaun Lanier hit a two-run home run to make it 5-1. Anthony Potestio made it back-to-back home runs with a solo shot. Ashworth walked to lead off the third. He stole second and came around to score on a Dylan Lina single.
Spencer Seid, the third UCSD pitcher of the game, walked Evans to open the fourth. Efren Ortega battled Seid to an eight-pitch at-bat, which resulted in a walk. Champagne's sac bunt was successful, moving both runners up a base. Seid struck out Toomey, looking for the second out. Seid struck out Ashworth, looking for the third out. Doubles from Potestio, Allen, and Lomanto resulted in four runs for the Tritons in the fourth.
Briseno led off the fifth with a double to left center. Cadena reached on a one-out infield single. With two outs, Evans walked to load the bases. Seid ran the count to 3-2 against Ortega before walking in the third LBSU run. Garrett Davidson relieved Seid, facing Champagne as his first batter. Davidson induced a Champagne grounder to third to end the inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Tritons recorded three consecutive hits, resulting in a Lomanto RBI single. Lina homered to begin the seventh, his third of the year. The Tritons scored twice in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead.
Champagne walked for the second time with one out in the eighth. Harry Pelzman, who entered the eighth for UC San Diego, walked Charpiot. With two runners on, Ashworth singled through the right side to score Champagne, sending Charpiot to third. Briseno singled to center to drive in Charpiot. Lina singled to load the bases for Cadena. Cadena was hit by a 1-2 Pelzman pitch, scoring Ashworth.
Ethan Remmers relieved Pelzman. His first batter was Luke Taylor. The LBSU designated hitter singled to center to drive in two runs. Evans' opposite-field single down the right field line scored LBSU's 10th run. Kevin King came on for the Tritons. His first batter was pinch-hitter Reid Montgomery. King struck out Montgomery for the second out. Champagne walked to load the bases. Charpiot hit a liner to center that Crossland caught to keep it 13-10.
Jake Fields started the eighth in relief. With one out, he issued back-to-back walks to Patrick Hackworth and Emiliano Gonzalez. Lanier hit a shot back to Fields on the mound. He knocked it down and threw it to first for the second out. Cooper Thacker attempted to bunt but popped it up where Dirtbags' catcher Conner Stewart made the play in foul territory.
With the count 3-2 to Ashworth, King was called for a pitch clock violation, resulting in a walk. Briseno hit into a 4-1 putout, allowing Ashworth to advance to second. King struck out Lina. Cadena flew out to center to end the game.
Nine of the 17 UC San Diego hits were for extra bases. Crossland, Lomanto, and Allen each had three hits for the Tritons. Lina was 3-for-6 with his home run and two RBI. Cadena was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a home run, and two RBI.
