Charpiot goes 2-for-4 with four RBI to lead LBSU
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Michigan evened the baseball series against Long Beach State Saturday night as the Wolverines defeated the Dirtbags 10-6 at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Alex Champagne reached on an opposite-field single to left. With cleanup hitter Armando Briseno at the plate, Champagne stole second. Michigan starter Dylan Vigue walked Briseno. Both runners moved up a base on a passed ball. Dylan Lina walked to load the bases. Vigue walked Connor Charpiot to force Champagne in for the first Long Beach State run. Luke Taylor worked the count to 2-2 before hitting a grounder back to Vigue. He threw to first to complete the inning.
Jeter Ybarra singled to begin the Wolverines' second. He went to second on a passed ball. Cole Caruso's flair to right resulted in a single and runners on the corners for Michigan. LBSU starter Josh Donegan struck out Colby Turner. Noah Miller popped out to short. Robert Hamchuk's Texas Leaguer dropped in right-center to score Ybarra as runners remained on the corners. AJ Rausch's opposite-field single to right drove in Caruso. Jonathan Kim hit a short fly to left that Matt Toomey dove for and caught for the final out of the inning.
Five of the first six Wolverines recorded base hits in the top of the third, resulting in four runs for Michigan. Ybarra added an RBI double in the top of the fourth. The Dirtbags got two back in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of two-out RBI singles from Nathan Cadena and Alex Champagne.
Vigue walked Lina to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Grant Bradley relieved Vigue. His first batter, Charpiot, hit a shot to left where Hamchuck slipped on the grass, allowing the ball to fall for a double as Lina scored on the play. Toomey's infield single to second with one out allowed Charpiot to reach third. Voit raced into short centerfield to make a catch on an Efren Ortega pop-up for the second out. Cade Connolly relieved Bradley to face Kyle Ashworth in a lefty-lefty matchup. Toomey stole second to give the Dirtbags a pair of runners in scoring position. With the count 3-2, Ashworth flew out to center for the final out.
Taylor led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single. Easton Elliot ran for Taylor before Toomey walked. Ortega successfully bunted the runners up a base to bring up Ashworth. Rogers struck out Ashworth before getting Cardena to ground out to first to end the frame.
Michigan loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth. Ybarra's opposite-field single through the left side drove in two runs. Caruso followed with an RBI double. Charpiot doubled with one out in the bottom of the eighth to score Champagne and Lina for the final runs of the night.
Yabarra and Caruso led the Wolverines as both recorded three hits. Charpiot went 2-for-4 with four RBI to lead Long Beach State. Champagne and Taylor each had two hits for LBSU. Connolly was awarded the win in relief. Rogers pitched the final 3.1 innings to post his second save of the season. The Dirtbags left 14 on base, and Michigan left nine.
Long Beach State (5-5) and Michigan (5-4) complete the series Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
