Dirtbags' Ninth Inning Rally Just Falls Short As Michigan Edges LBSU 7-6

3/2/2025 4:42:00 PM | Baseball

Kyle Ashworth had three hits, Matt Toomey scored three times

LONG BEACH, Calif.—A furious ninth-inning rally fell short for Long Beach State on Sunday as the University of Michigan defeated Long Beach State 7-6 in baseball action Sunday afternoon at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.

Connor Charpiot was the lone Dirtbags' baserunner against David Lally Jr. through the first three innings as he walked in the second inning. Lalley Jr. struck out Matt Toomey as Charpiot attempted to steal. Charpiot was called out due to batter interference.

The Wolverines threatened in the top of the fourth as Michigan put runners on first and second with one out. Cole Caruso hit a liner to Dylan Lina at third. Lina caught the ball and threw to Nathan Cadena at second to complete the double play and end the frame.

Jonathan Kim walked to lead off the top of the sixth. He moved to second on a Benjamin Casillas sac bunt. Owen Geiss relieved Jake Fields on the mount. With the count 2-2, Geiss' wild pitch allowed Kim to advance to third. Mitch Voit singled through the left side to score Kim. Voit stole second on a 1-2 pitch to Jeter Ybarra. Geiss struck out Ybarra, looking to bring up Caruso, who grounded out to second to wrap up the inning.

Lalley Jr. carried a no-hitter into the sixth, hitting Toomey on a 3-2 count to begin the inning. Conner Stewart sacrificed Toomey to second. Kyle Ashworth's opposite-field double to the wall in left was nearly caught by Robert Hamchuk, but he could not come up with the catch. Toomey scored on the play to tie the score. Tate Carey entered in relief for the Wolverines.

Up 1-2 in the count, Carey uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Ashworth to move up a base. Carey struck out Cadena. Michigan elected to intentionally walk the left-handed hitting Alex Champagne to create a right-right matchup with Lina, LBSU's cleanup hitter. With the count 1-2, Champagne stole second. Lina ran the count to 3-2 before lining out to right field for the final out.

Matt Spear returned the lead to Michigan with his second home run of the season, a blast to left center to begin the top of the seventh. Will Rogers followed with a double to left. Lina made a diving stop at third on a Hamchuk ground to third. He came up throwing for the first out. Geiss struck out AJ Rausch. Kim singled through the right side to score Rogers. Casillas walked after Kim stole second. Voit singled to left to plate Kim.

Spear homered again, with one out in the top of the eighth.

Toomey led off the bottom of the eighth with an infield single. Ashworth's single to left field pushed Toomey to second. A Carey wild pitch put both runners in scoring position. Cadena worked the count to 3-2 before his opposite-field single to right scored Toomey. Champagne popped out to leftfield. Lina flew out to right field to keep it 5-2.

Voit hit a two-run home run with two outs in the top of the ninth.

Charpiot began the bottom of the ninth with a single through the left side. Luke Taylor followed with his first home run of the season to cut the advantage to 7-4. Grant Bradley relieved Carey. He struck out Armando Briseno to begin his stint. Toomey singled up the middle.

Pinch-hitter Justin Roulston doubled down the left field line to advance Toomey to third. Max Debiec relieved Bradley as Ashworth came to the plate. Ashworth's shot went off Voit at second, allowing Toomey to score. Cadena walked to load the bases. The count went to 3-2 before Champagne walked as the fourth run of the inning scored. Lina popped up to first for the second out. Charpiot returned to the plate, where he popped out to short to end the game.

Voit led Michigan (6-4), going 3-for-4 with four RBI. Rogers was also 3-for-4 for the Wolverines. Ashworth recorded three of the nine Long Beach State hits. Toomey went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

Long Beach State (5-6) hosts Tulane (7-3) Monday night. Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 6 p.m.
