Savannah Tucker’s Career-High Leads Long Beach State To A Win Over CSUN

The senior scored 33 points while shooting over 55% from the field.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – A career-high afternoon from Savannah Tucker and a dominating second half led Long Beach State to an 88-65 Big West women's basketball victory on the road at CSUN.
Hot shooting from the three-point line got the game as the Beach took a 7-0 early lead, opening a 7-0 gap. The Matadors cut the lead with back-to-back threes before Patricia Chung got on the board with her first three of the period. A quick 5-0 run by CSUN gave the hosts the 11-10 lead at the media timeout. Chung quickly gave the Beach the lead with her second three of the game, 13-11. Tucker continued her hot shooting, closing the quarter with two more three-pointers, and Beach led 21-19 at the end of the first.
Tucker continued leading the Beach on the second as Long Beach State took a 7-0 run to extend their lead, 30-23. Both teams traded three points before Rachel Loobie added a layup to maintain Long Beach State's advantage. The Matadors fought back to cut the lead, but a defensive effort by Tucker found JaQuoia Jones-Brown open to extend the lead to 37-30. CSUN answered back to close the gap at the end of the second as the Beach went into halftime up, 39-36.
The third period saw Tucker add her sixth three-pointer to keep the Beach in the lead, 44-38. CSUN cut the lead, but a quick steal by Chung saw her open for a jump shot as Long Beach State opened a nine-point lead. Jones-Brown, Oliva-Hernandez, and Chung all added threes for the Beach to extend the lead for the Beach at the end of the third, 62-49.
The Beach completed a strong second half with a dominating fourth quarter. Jada Crawshaw and Loobie added four quick points for the Beach before CSUN cut the lead to 68-53. Tucker recorded her seventh three-pointer of the game as Mykelle Richards added two more for Long Beach State to make it 78-56.
Loobie and Crawshaw went back and forth to keep the Beach's lead, but CSUN scored four straight points to cut it. Tucker got back on the court with 27 seconds left and added two more points for a new career-high of 33 points. The Matadors still added two more to the board, but the Beach, with a dominating second half, defeated CSUN on the road, 88-65.
Tucker is the first player in the Amy Wright era to score over 30 points in a game. Loobie added a double-double with a season-high 16 points and 12 rebounds. Chung added 13 points and dished four assists for a team-high. Crawshaw added 10 to become the fourth Beach player to score in double digits.
Kelly Tumlin and Nnenna Orji recorded 14 points for the Matadors, while Alondra Lizama added a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Laini Dahlin scored 11.
The Beach (12-10, 8-5 Big West) shot over 50 percent in a game from the field this season as LBSU went 33-of-64 from the floor (51.6%). Long Beach State shot an impressive 44.8% (13-of-29) from three-point range. Long Beach State outscored the Matadors on the paint (24-18) and edged by one rebound (44-43).
The Matadors (4-18, 2-11 Big West) ended the game, shooting 28.8% (19-of-66) and 37.5% from the three-point line (9-24).
The Beach is back in the Walter Pyramid on Thursday night to host first-place Hawai'i (13-6, 9-2 Big West). Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN+
