Long Beach State Falls Short To Hawai’i At The Gold Mine

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State fought hard against Big West leader Hawai'i on Thursday night at the Gold Mine but fell short 72-65.
Despite the Rainbow Wahine's hot shooting in the first period with 57% (8-from-14), the Beach led early. A steal from Jada Crawshaw found Savannah Tucker free on the breakaway as the Beach took the early lead 5-2 in the first. UH answered back with two straight baskets to take the lead.
Five straight from Rachel Loobie put the Beach back on top 10-6. Crawshaw and Mykelle Richards gave the Beach a seven-point lead. Hawai'i returned to the game at the end of the first to cut the lead, 19-16.
The Rainbow Wahine went on a six-point run at the start of the second period to take the lead for the second time in the game, 22-21. The Beach, who shot over 40% from the field on the second, scored back-to-back baskets to regain the lead 25-22. Back-to-back threes from the Beach extended the lead 28-24.
Jaquoia Jones-Brown went wire to wire, forcing a time out from the Rainbow Wahine as the Beach extended the lead, 35-26. UH scored four unanswered at the end of the second as the Beach led at half, 38-33.
A beautiful pass from Crawshaw found Tucker open to start the second half. Tucker hit back-to-back threes before UH went on an 8-0 run to go up 47-46 after holding the Beach scoreless for over three minutes. Richards stopped the Bows run, and the Beach retook the lead. After trading baskets, Hawai'i took the lead with a three-pointer, but the Crawshaw-Tucker connection shortened the lead to close the third period with the Beach trailing 54-53.
The Beach struggled from the field in the fourth quarter as UH held LBSU to 2-for-17 as the Rainbow Wahine extended their lead after an LBSU technical foul. Loobie tied the game for the Beach, but UH's 7-0 run gave them a nine-point lead. The Rainbow Wahine controlled the final few minutes to defeat the Beach, 72-65.
The Rainbow Wahine (18-6, 12-2 Big West) outscored Long Beach State (12-11, 8-6 Big West) in the paint, 40-28, while shooting 47.2% (25-from-53) from the field against Long Beach State's 33.3% (22-from-66).
Tucker led Long Beach State with 19 points while Crawshaw added 12 and a team-high six rebounds and four assists. Loobie was the third Beach player with double digits, adding 10.
Ritorya Tamilo added 15 points for the Bows, while Lily Wahinekapu scored 14. Kelsie Imai and MeiLani McBee also scored in double digits, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Beach is back in action next Thursday night when they host UC Riverside (11-13, 7-7 Big West) before heading to UC Santa Barbara (13-10, 7-6 Big West) on Saturday afternoon.
