Savannah Tucker Hits Milestone As The Beach Defeats UC Riverside, 75-69

With 19 points scored in tonight’s game, the senior surpassed 1,000 career points.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Savannah Tucker became the 27th player in Long Beach State Women's Basketball to hit 1,000 career points in program history as the Beach defeated UC Riverside, 75-69 on Thursday night at the Walter Pyramid.
A strong start by the Beach gave a quick 7-0 lead before UCR responded with five in a row. A no-look pass from Lovely Sonnier found Mykelle Richards to extend the lead 17-11 at the media timeout. The Highlanders' back-to-back baskets shortened the lead before Tucker added a layup. UCR fought back to tie the game at the end of the first quarter, 21-21.
Tucker's steal led to a breakaway and gave the Beach a 25-23 lead early in the second, but the Highlanders answered with a quick three. Tucker's 1.000th career point came as she sank a three-point basket at the 5:21 mark of the period. Both teams had 6-0 runs, but UCR came away at half leading 37-36 after 20 minutes.
The Highlanders opened the third quarter by scoring seven consecutive points to take their largest game lead, 46-38. The Beach answered back when JaQuoia Jones-Brown scored and Rachel Loobie's fadeaway to put the Beach within four with 7:05 left. Tucker converted two from the free throw line before the media timeout to shorten the lead to 48-46. UCR answered back, but Tucker's second three of the game left the Beach trailing by one with 3:30 left. Sonnier found Jada Crawshaw open as LBSU took the lead 51-49. After UCR answered, the Beach closed the quarter with back-to-back baskets to extend the lead, 55-52.
A 5-0 start by the Beach in the fourth quarter forced a time-out by UCR as LBSU led 60-53. After trading baskets, UCR took the lead in the middle of the period 65-64. An 8-0 run by the Beach gave the control of the game with under a minute left when Tucker made a layup, 74-67. The game's final points came via the free throw line for the final 75-69.
Tucker led the team with 19 points while shooting 70% from the field (7-for-10). With tonight's game the senior is 11 points behind Lauren Spargo, 26th on the 1,000 career points list. Loobie added 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Richards and Patricia Chung scored in double digits with 12 and 11, respectively. Crawshaw dished out a team-high four assists.
Seneca Hackley led the Highlanders with 17 points, while Makayla Rose added 11. Jordyn Marshall and Shelley Duchemin added 10 points for UCR on the night.
The Beach (13-11, 9-6 Big West) outscored the Highlanders (12-14, 8-8 Big West) 40-30 in the paint. LBSU shot over 50% for the second time in the season (30-for-58), while UC Riverside shot 44.8% (26-for-58).
The Beach is back on the road Saturday afternoon when LBSU faces UC Santa Barbara (14-11, 8-7 Big West) at the Thunderdome. Tipoff against the Gauchos is set for 4:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
