Women’s Basketball Falls On the Road To UC Santa Barbara, 73-58

The Beach will continue on the road to face Cal State Bakersfield Thursday night.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Savannah Tucker led the Beach on offense again, but Long Beach State struggled to gain momentum in the second half and fell to UC Santa Barbara on the road, 73-58.
Long Beach State (13-12, 9-7 Big West) got off straight from the tipoff to find Tucker open for a layup. UC Santa Barbara (16-11, 10-7 Big West) would answer with two 7-0 runs, helping the Gauchos take an 18-15 lead. Mykelle Richards got on the board to stop the run from the Gauchos, but the hosts closed the first ten minutes up 20-17.
In the second quarter, the Beach struggled shooting from the field 17.6% (3-of-17) while the Gauchos shot 44.4% (4-of-9). Both teams traded baskets early on until for over three minutes both teams were scoreless from the field. JaQuoia Jones-Brown put a stop to the Beach drought with a layup cutting the lead to 33-28. The Gauchos finished the quarter with a 5-0 run to head into halftime with their largest lead of the game to that point, up 38-28.
The second half saw two quick 8-0 runs for both teams. First the Beach got going with back-to-back threes by Chung and Tucker, closing the gap to 40-36 and forcing a timeout by the Gauchos. After the timeout it was UCSB's turn to have an 8-0 run with back-to-back threes by Jessica Grant. Tucker got on the board with a layup to stop the run, but Grant continued her hot shooting to help the Gauchos hold a 56-44 lead after three quarters.
UCSB continued their hot shooting from the three-point line to open the last ten minutes of play. Jada Crawshaw got on the board twice to put the Beach within ten, but the Gauchos kept answering back and did not allow the Beach to make a comeback.
Both teams were even in the paint, scoring 20 points each but the Gauchos bench outscored the Beach, 40-9 to help the hosts to secure the win. UCSB shot 40% from the field (21-of-52) and 38% from the three-point line (9-of-24) while holding LBSU to 31% from the field (19-of-61) and 24% from threes (6-of-25).
Tucker led the Beach with 17 points while Chung added 11 and Jones-Brown 10 while dishing a team-high of three assists. Loobie notched a team high of 11 rebounds.
Olivia Bradley and Jessica Grant led the Gauchos with 18 points each. Skylar Burke added 11 while Alyssa Marin notched 10 points in the afternoon.
The Beach will remain on the road next week, facing Cal State Bakersfield (2-25, 2-15 Big West) on Thursday night. Tipoff for the match against the Roadrunners is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
