Softball Officially Begins Season With Two Wins

Long Beach State dominated Pacific before holding off Seattle from the Stanford Invitational.

STANFORD, Calif. – Long Beach State finished off their game with Pacific initially started on Thursday with a win, and then grabbed one more in a promising start to the season on Friday with two victories. The Beach defeated Pacific 13-2 in five innings before taking down Seattle 7-6 from Stanford.

Resuming Thursday's game with Long Beach State (2-0) in the lead 5-0 in the first inning, the Beach quickly took over where they had left off against Pacific (0-1). Shannon Haddad quickly retired the side for the Tigers, and then the Beach went back to work on offense in the top of the second.

With Corissa Sweet on first base, senior Rebekah Durazo hit the first home run of the season for Long Beach State, a two-run shot to left field to put LBSU on top 7-0. The Tigers pulled one run back in the bottom half of the second on an RBI single from Olivia Silverstre, but after a quiet third, the Beach opened up the game for good in the fourth with a two-out rally.

With a runner on, a double from Priscilla Iniguez scored the first run for the Beach, and sophomore Brooklyn Lee followed with a single to score Iniguez and put the Beach on top 8-1. Two walks loaded the bases in front of Bickar, who hit a station-to-station single to score one run. Sweet was up next and hit a single to add one more, and Carly Robbins was hit to make the score 12-1 after four.

With runners on the corners in the fifth, Avery Weisbrook added an additional insurance run with an RBI single, and while the Tigers scored one more run on an Olivia Slive home run, the Beach finished off the win 13-2.

Haddad collected her first win of the season with four innings of work, giving up one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Freshman Priscilla Iniguez went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI with two runs scored to lead the offense.

Freshman Brynne Nally took the circle for Long Beach State in the second game of the day against Seattle (0-1). The Redhawks would grab an early lead in the contest, taking advantage of a leadoff walk from Nally in her collegiate debut to push across the first run of the game, taking a 1-0 lead.

Long Beach State evened the score in the second inning. Iniguez continued her hot start with a single in the second inning, and after two walks loaded the bases, a sacrifice fly from Jacquelyn Bickar scored the freshman to tie the game.

Seattle regained the lead by scoring a run in the fourth, and added one more in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead, but the Beach bounced back with a big inning in the bottom of the fifth.

With the top of the order up, Bickar and Carly Robbins hit back-to-back singles, followed by one more hit, and RBI single from Makayla Medellin to make the score 3-2. A double from Durazo plated a pair to put the Beach in front 4-3, and then with the bases loaded, a Brooklyn Lee single scored to more to put the Beach up 6-3. A sacrifice fly from Selena Perez, her second of the day added one final run, one that would end up being critical to the contest as the Beach took a 7-3 lead.

Seattle roared back in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with a walk and two singles as Nally turned the circle over to Lindsey Cowans. Another walk allowed one run to score, and sophomore Kate Barnett came in for the Beach. A walk and a single scored two more runs, but a groundout helped Barnett and the Beach get out of the inning with the lead, 7-6.

Nally retunred for the seventh inning, and grabbed three quick outs with a game-ending 5-6-3 double play to finish off her first career win.

Long Beach State will close out the Stanford Invitational with one more game, facing Fresno State with a scheduled first pitch at 10 a.m. Live scoring will be found at www.beachlivestats.com.
