Long Beach State forced overtime with UC Davis but TY Johnson carried the Aggies to the win.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State rallied from four points down with less than two minutes remaining, but a star performance from UC Davis leader TY Johnson helped the Aggies rally for a 73-65 overtime win over the Beach Thursday in the Walter Pyramid.
Long Beach State (7-17, 3-9 Big West) trailed by four points in the closing minutes of regulation, but after two free throws and a tough stepback jumper from Devin Askew, the Beach tied the game with under a minute to play. Johnson and Askew each hit a pair from the line in the final 30 seconds to send the game to overtime.
Johnson, who finished with a game-high 33 points, was the difference for UC Davis (13-10, 7-5 Big West) in the overtime period. The senior went 4-for-5 from the floor and scored 12 total points as the Aggies struck first and never trailed in the extra five minutes.
That was a different story from the first 40, as neither team led by more than seven points throughout regulation. Getting a lift early from the return of freshman Andrew Nagy, the Beach rallied from falling behind 20-13 with a 12-0 run to take a 25-20 lead capped by a fast break dunk from Cam Denson. A freshman who had missed the last four games, Nagy finished with a career-high nine points and had seven in the first half, tied for the team lead along with Denson and Askew as the Beach led at the break 30-29.
The teams traded baskets and leads through the second half. A TJ Wainwright jumper tied the game at 51 with just over four minutes remaining, and the Beach had enough to mount the comeback to force overtime.
Askew led Long Beach State with 17 points and four assists. Cam Denson finished in double-figures with 10 poitns as well, while Austin Johnson scored nine points with a team-high seven rebounds as the Beach won the battle on the glass, 30-29 on the evening.
Long Beach State will play one more game at home this weekend, hosting CSUN at 4 p.m. inside of the Walter Pyramid. Live coverage will be provided on ESPN+.
