Long Beach State Loses In Tight Game With CSUN

2/8/2025 7:51:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Devin Askew finished with a double-double with 22 points and 11 assists.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Men's Basketball once again gave themselves a chance, but couldn't come up with the victory in an 81-80 defeat to CSUN in the Walter Pyramid.

Devin Askew continued to be a force for Long Beach State, recording his third double-double in the last six games after scoring 22 points and making a career-high 11 assists, also leading the team with seven rebounds as the senior made a huge impact on the night.

CSUN (17-7, 9-4 Big West), similar to the Northridge matchup took an early lead, opening up a seven-point edge in the first eight minutes but Long Beach State battled back, started off by a three from Askew. The Beach pulled back even at 20-20, and a three from Andrew Nagy tie the game once more at 28-28 mere minutes later, and the Matadors would hold just a two-point edge at the half, 43-41.

TJ Wainwright, who didn't score in the first half, gave the Beach a lift in the second half as Long Beach State fought back time and time again. The Matadors opened up an 11-point lead, their largest of the game with a run to start the second half, but a three from Askew and two quick buckets from Wainwright helped pull the edge back to four points with just over 13 minutes to play.

Each team had an answer for the other teams runs through the second half, however, and the Beach could never quite push back in front.

Down six with a minute to play, Long Beach State found TJ Wainwright for a clutch 3-pointer, and forced a travel with strong pressure to get the stop that they needed entering the closing minutes. Askew's last effort didn't fall though, and the Beach remained behind by three. After the conclusion of regulation play, a technical foul was assessed to the CSUN bench. Askew made both ensuing free throws making the official final score 81-80.

Long Beach State will have one game next week but a critical one, playing on the road at Hawai'i.
