Women’s Water Polo Set To Face No. 10 Arizona State On The First Round Of The Barbara Kalbus Invitational

The Beach will face the Sun Devils for the first time this season.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 8 Long Beach State will start their last non-conference tournament with a match up against No. 10 Arizona State Friday at the Crawford Pool at UC Irvine for the Barbara Kalbus Invitational hosted by the Anteaters.
The Beach (5-6) started the week hosting the Toronto Golden Jets for an exhibition game on Tuesday night. Freshman Rita Gurri Capel notched four goals as Long Beach State took the 17-3 win over the Canadians.
Long Beach State's Spaniards lead the team on offense. Senior Martina Cardona has 28 goals so far in the season while junior Elisa Portillo has 24. Freshman duo of Gurri Capel and Daniela Quinzada Gonzalez have made an immediate impact for the Beach combining 24 goals. On defense, senior Chelsea Oliver continues to help LBSU in the cage with 67 saves in the season, totaling 568 career saves, fourth in the program history.
The Sun Devils (13-3, 0-1 MPSF) hosted the Cross Conference Invitational last week finishing with a 4-0 record after defeating Salem, Long Island, Cal State Fullerton and Iona College. ASU is led by Millie Quin with 45 goals and Itziar Almeda with 35. Almeda has a team-high of 21 assists in the season. On defense, all four goalies have split time in the cage combining for over 150 saves for the Sun Devils.
First sprint for the game is scheduled for 11:20 a.m. with live stats on thefosh.net. The Beach will face either No. 1 USC or Biola in the second round of the tournament.
