Strong Second Half Leads Beach To A Dominant Win Against No. 10 ASU

The Beach went on a 15-2 run to defeat the Sun Devils.

IRVINE, Calif. – No. 7 Long Beach State dominated No. 10 Arizona State, 19-8 to open the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. After being down by two at half, the Beach went on a 15-2 run to close the game and defeat the Sun Devils.

Arizona State (13-4) started the game strong and opened the game with a quick goal. Long Beach State (6-6) answered back and tied the game with Elisa Portillo on a counterattack. ASU answered back to take the lead, 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Freshman Rita Gurri Capel tied the game on a powerplay, but the Sun Devils answered back with back-to-back goals to lead 4-2 with 5:32 left. Junior Hailey Multz cut the lead for the Beach quickly after and Gaby Pateneude tied the game, but ASU added two more to close the first half up 6-4.

The second half of the game was pure domination by Long Beach State. In the third quarter the Beach went on a 5-1 run to take the lead for the first time in the game and head into the last quarter up 9-7. Picking up from where they left, the Beach went on a 10-1 run to shut down the Sun Devils and advance to the top 8 of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.

Junior Grace Cuozzo had a career-high of three goals and Gurri Capel added a hat-trick on the win. Martina Cardona, Elisa Portillo, Zelma Koka and Daniela Quinzada Gonzalez added two goals each while Jamie Oberman, Chiara Amoroso, Gaby Patenuede, Jermonie Billinglsy and Hailey Multz added one each. Senior Chelsea Oliver added 11 saves to help the Beach on defense.

The Beach will now face No. 1 USC (11-0) at 8 a.m. on Saturday at UC Irvine. Live stats can be followed on thefosh.net.
