Long Beach State had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, but didn’t score the critical run.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State took an early lead against Kansas, but two home runs put the Jayhawks in front and the Beach couldn't cash in their last opportunity in a 3-2 defeat to close the Wilson Tournament for Long Beach State softball.
Long Beach State (4-4) opened the game by taking an early lead. Senior Jacquelyn Bickar was hit by a pitch, and after being bunted over to second, the speedy Bickar took third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to put LBSU in front 1-0 after the first inning.
The Beach added another run in the third inning. Carly Robbins opened the inning with a single, and after another single from Rebekah Durazo, an RBI single from transfer Brooklyn Lee put the Beach in front 2-0.
Shannon Haddad had cleared three innings without incident, but surrendered two home runs in the fourth to change the nature of the contest. After a leadoff single, Hailey Cripe hit a two-run shot to left to tie the game with one swing. Two outs later, Kansas (4-5) took the lead as Bailey Amezcua hit a solo shot also to left to put the Jayhawks in front 3-2.
Lindsey Cowans came on in the circle for Long Beach State and kept Kansas off the board the rest of the way and give the Beach a chance.
That opportunity came in the bottom of the seventh. KaLeena Gonzales led off the inning with a single, and then pinch hitter Erica Estrada legged out an infield single to put two on. Bickar then worked a walk to load the bases with no outs in a promising situation. Robbins grounded out to the pitcher for a double play, leading two runners in scoring position. A flare from Makayla Medellin that would have ended the game was just inches foul, and instead on the next pitch the junior grounded out to end the game with Kansas still in the lead.
Long Beach State will next take part in one of the nation's premier tournaments, the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Beach opens their time in Cathedral City on Friday with a single game against Utah at 3 p.m. on Friday, February 21.
