Nally, Durazo help deliver Long Beach State a power conference win.
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Freshman pitcher Brynne Nally went the distance for Long Beach State, holding Utah to one run on five hits while Rebekah Durazo drove in a pair of runs as the battery led the way to a 3-1 win over Utah to start the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Long Beach State (5-4) struck first in classic fashion as the seniors delivered at the top of the lineup. Jacquelyn Bickar started the game with a single, and after getting pushed to second, scored on an RBI single from Rebekah Durazo in the top of the first.
After keeping Utah (4-9) scoreless through two innings, Long Beach State nearly escaped the third unscathed. After a pair of one out singles, a third hit to left allowed the newly converted outfielder Bickar to grab another outfield assist, throwing out Shelbi Ortiz at the plate. The Utes tied the score with an RBI single to make the score 1-1 after the third.
Long Beach State regained the lead in the top of the fifth. Carly Robbins hit a one-out double to start the rally, and after a second double from Lina Apodaca, a single from Durazo scored the first run of the inning for the Beach. A second RBI single, this time coming from Brooklyn Lee scored one more and the Beach led after five 3-1.
Nally worked around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the sixth and struck out a pair to finish off the complete game, the first of the freshman's career.
Long Beach State's time at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic continues on Saturday, as the Beah will face Seattle U at 9:30 a.m. and Oregon State at Noon. Both games will be broadcast live on FloCollege.
