Freshman Priscilla Iniguez hit a home run in both games for Long Beach State.
Long Beach State (5-6) jumped out to a big lead in a wild, back and forth game with Seattle (7-6). Shannon Haddad worked around trouble in the first inning and then Long Beach State went to work in the bottom half. Jacquelyn Bickar started the inning with a walk, and after a hit batter and a walk loaded the bases, Makayla Medellin delivered with a big hit to score two runs and leave two on. Freshman Priscilla Iniguez then brought home three more with her first collegiate home run, making the score 5-0 after the first inning.
Seattle scored one in the top of the second, but the Beach answered back to keep the lead at five runs. Bickar and Robbins each reached to put a runner in scoring position, and after a fielder's choice an RBI from Rebekah Durazo made the score 6-1.
Seattle had the first of their two big innings in the fourth. The middle of the RedHawk lineup all reached to start the inning with three straight hits, and while Haddad picked up a strikeout with the score 6-2, Amanda Morris tripled to make the score 6-4 scoring both runners. A double from KJ Hopfer against reliever Kate Barnett then made the score 6-5, but Barnett was able to work out of the inning.
The Beach worked through trouble again in the fourth, but Maddy Martin was able to get a 1-2-3 groundout double play to end the inning. Seattle tied the game in the top of the sixth.
Long Beach State had an answer in the bottom of the sixth. Robbins was the catalyst again with a leadoff single, and scored on a single from Lina Apodaca after an error from the RedHawks. With Apodaca on third, a sacrifice fly from Brooklyn Lee put the Beach back in front 8-6.
Seattle would take the momentum one final time. A leadoff error haunted the Beach, as LBSU had two outs in the inning with the score 8-7, but a three-run home run from Wehn put Seattle in front 10-8, and Ava Morris closed out the win in the bottom of the seventh.
Long Beach State again took an early lead in the second contest. Bickar was hit and quickly stole second, and after a wild pitch scored easily on an RBI single from Apodaca as the Beach took a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Iniguez, after hitting her first college home run in game one, added a second in the fourth inning of game two against the Beavers, a solo shot to left center to put the Beach in front 2-0.
Brynne Nally held Oregon State (5-7) to just one hit through the first four innings, but surrendered a run in the fifth, and then the Beavers broke the game open in the sixth. A pair of singles and a sacrifice put two runners in scoring position, and a single from Jaeya Butler tied the game and left runners on the corners. A hit batter and a walk put Oregon State in front 3-2 with the bases loaded, and a double from Morgan Howey and a single by Paige Bamberger pushed the lead up to 7-2.
The Beach made a final push in the bottom of the seventh. Bickar once again got things started with a walk, and after a single from Apodaca, Durazo hit a three-run home run to make the score 7-5, but the lead was too much to overcome and Ellie Garcia closed out the complete game for Oregon State.
Long Beach State closes out the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with two final games on Saturday, facing Minnesota at 9:30 a.m. before finishing the tournament against Howard.
