LBSU hangs tough through halftime before Portland closes out a 94–58 decision behind turnovers and second-chance scoring.
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State women's basketball returned to the Pyramid on Thursday night for a nonconference matchup against Portland, opening the game with composure and matching the Pilots possession for possession throughout the first half.
The Beach trailed just 31–28 at halftime, supported by a buzzer beater from JaQuoia Jones-Brown and locked-in perimeter shooting from Brynna Pukis. The game shifted after the break, as Portland used defensive pressure and transition opportunities to create a decisive 33–12 third quarter that broke open what had been a tightly contested matchup.
Despite the widening margin, LBSU continued to produce in the half court. Jones-Brown delivered a steady offensive performance with 25 points and nine rebounds, providing scoring throughout the night. Pukis added 11 points on perfect shooting from three, giving the Beach an efficient perimeter option. However, Portland's advantages in points off turnovers and second-chance scoring ultimately created the separation that led to a 94–58 win over the Beach.
The Beach return to the road to face UCLA next week, Saturday December 20. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in the Pauley Pavilion.
