Women’s Basketball Hosts Cal Poly Saturday At The Goldmine

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach State's strong second half led the Beach to a comeback win over CSUN, 88-75. Looking for their eighth win in the Big West, the Beach will host Cal Poly at the Goldmine. Tipoff for the match up against the Mustangs is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN+ on Saturday, January 25.

ABOUT THE BEACH
• Long Beach State and UC Irvine are the only teams with just one league loss so far this year, sharing the top of the Big West standings.
• This will be the first match up in the season between the Beach and the Mustangs.
• As a team, LBSU is shooting 38.7% from the field and averaging a league-leading 43.9 rebounds per game.
• LBSU Head Coach Amy Wright is back on the hardwood for her second season at the Beach.
• The Beach welcomed back six letterwinners from a year ago, while adding eight talented newcomers to the mix.
 
• Long Beach State closed the non-conference season with a milestone heavy victory against Bethesda. The Beach downed the Lion Angels, 122-49, marking the highest scoring game in program history since 1987. It was also the first time in 10 years LBSU has recorded 100 points.
 
• LBSU also set a program record for most points scored in a single quarter as the Beach tallied 46 points in the third quarter.
• In the win over Bethesda, the Beach recorded six season-highs in points (122), rebounds (61), assists (29), steals (25), made field goals (44), and field goal percentage (49.4%).
 
• For the first time in Long Beach State Women's Basketball history, all five starters reached double-figures as Mykelle Richards led the way with 21 points, while Lovely Sonnier (16 points), Savannah Tucker (16 points), Rachel Loobie (15 points), and Patricia Chung (13) all recorded double-figures.
 
VERY SAVVY
• Senior guard Savannah Tucker leads the Beach in scoring with 16.2 points per game as she comes in second in The Big West. The product out of Fresno, Calif., turned in a career-high 29-point performance at Sacramento State on November 17. She has recorded six 20-plus point performances this season and eight in her career, including four in January already with 22 points against UC Riverside and UC Davis and 26 points against UC San Diego. In addition to her hot shooting, Tucker also contributes 3.2 rebounds per game, while adding 49 assists. Her 23 steals are third on the team. Tucker leads the conference with a 1.57 assist/turnover ratio, while ranking sixth in assists per game (2.9), tenth in free throw percentage (.789), and seventh in field goal percentage (.390).

CLEANING UP THE GLASS
Rachel Loobie is the team's leader in rebounding with 7.5 boards per game to rank fourth in the conference. That number has gone up in league play, as Loobie leads the Big West at 9.3 rebounds per game. The grad transfer from Wright State is solid all around as she adds 7.7 points per game, while leading the Beach in blocks with 21.
 
CAREER DAY
Sophomore forward Jada Crawshaw turned in another career performance on Thursday, Jan. 23 against CSUN as she added 20 points to help the Beach secure the win, the sophomore also collected 12 rebounds in the night. Prior to that game, Crawshaw's had a career high of 19 points against top ranked UCLA. In that game, 14 of her points coming in the second half and 10 of those points coming in the final 10 minutes of action. Crawshaw is Long Beach State's second leading scorer as she averages 10.9 points per game. Crawshaw is an all around solid player as she adds 4.9 rebounds per game, while totaling 18 assists, 14 steals, and 11 blocks on the year.
 
PLAYER NOTES
• True freshman Mykelle Richards registered a career-effort with 21 points, while shooting 41.7% from the field (10-14) to lead LBSU to a win over Bethesda on Monday, Dec 30. She also set a new career-best with seven steals against the Lion Angels. On the year, she owns a 52.8% field goal percentage to lead the Beach. Richards' 20 steals lead the team as she is in fourth place in the league with 2.0 steals per game.
 
• Senior guard Patricia Chung has been a consistent force for Long Beach State this season. She ranks in the Top 10 in The Big West in a pair of statistical categories. She is sixth in assists per game (2.9) and sixth in defensive rebounds per game (4.7). On the year, she is averaging 9.2 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game, to go along with 51 assists, 22 steals, and two blocks.
 
• True freshman JaQuoia Jones-Brown has found her groove with the Beach as she earned her first career start against Elon on Dec. 19. In that contest, she led LBSU with a career-high 17 points on 50.0% shooting from the field and 66.7% shooting from long distance. Against Bethesda,Jones-Brown registered her first-ever collegiate double-double with 16 points and 12 boards. On the year, she averages 7.2 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game, to go along with 19 assists, 13 steals, and 5 blocks.
 
• In the Big West Preseason Coaches Poll, Long Beach State was picked to finish fourth in the standings. The Beach garnered 63 points to come in behind preseason favorite Hawaii (96 points, 6 first-place votes), second place UC Irvine (95 points, 5 first-place votes), and UC Davis (81 points).
 
SCOUTING CAL POLY
• Cal Poly are 8-10 overall and have dropped a close contest with UC Irvine, 59-57. The Mustangs last win came on a close batte with UC Santa Barbara where they edged the Gauchos, 51-50 on the road.
 
• Annika Shah is the scoring leader for the Mustangs, averaging 14.4 points per game while leading the squad with 49 assists while starting every game. Sierra Litchie is averaging 6.9 rebounds to lead the team while Mary Carter leads the team in blicks with 22. Lietchie and Sidney Richards lead the team with 22 steals in the year.
 
THE SERIES: THE BEACH VS. THE MUSTANGS
LBSU leads the series against Cal Poly 51-30. In the past years, the Beach and the Mustangs traded streaks and Cal Poly brings a two-game winning streak against LBSU into the Goldmine on Saturday.
 
LAST TIME OUT: LBSU VS. CSUN
 
A strong second half by the Beach behind 47.4 percent shooting from Long Beach State led LBSU to a comeback win over CSUN. Savannah Tucker led the Beach with 24 points and Jada Crawshaw double-double helped the Beach secure another conference win. 
 
A quick basket from Rachel Loobie got Long Beach State (11-6, 7-1 Big West) on the board first, but a nine-point run from CSUN (3-14, 1-7) gave the Matadors the early lead. The Matadors shot 46.7 percent in the first quarter to extend their lead to nine points, but Savannah Tucker's eight points at the end of the first cut the lead to three as the Matadors led 19-16.
 
CSUN opened the second quarter with a 3-point basket. JaQuoia Jones-Brown scored her first bucker of the game to cut CSUN's lead to four. The Matadors led by 15 with 2:50 left in the second quarter after a 10-0 run. The Beach got on the board after over two minutes to head into the half trailing 45-32. 
 
Down ten at 49-39, an 8-0 run for Long Beach State sparked by a second chance basket from Jada Crawshaw opened up a new contest for the Beach. CSUN pushed the lead back to six at 61-55, but the Beach answered with a jumper from Loobie and four points from Tucker to pull within one, and then a Jaquioa Jones-Brown gave the Beach the lead with :44 seconds left in the third.      
 
Despite trailing by three entering the fourth quarter, the last period belonged the Beach. After a CSUN turnover Loobie tied the game at 67-67 with a 3-pointer, and the Beach moved back in front for good after back-to-back threes from Patricia Chung and Loobie put the Beach on top 75-70. The run continued as Sonnier pushed the lead to 80-70, and the 15-0 run for LBSU was finally snapped with just 3:34 remaining with the Beach lead in double figures. 
 
Two free throws from Tucker sealed the win as the senior finished off her sixth 20-point performance of the season with 24 points. Crawshaw tied a career-high with 20 points in a double-double with a team-high 12 rebounds, as the Beach out-rebounded the Matadors 53-41 and finished with 25 second-chance points on the night.  
 
Long Beach State will continue their homestand on Saturday, hosting Cal Poly in a game that will also be held in the Goldmine. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. against the Mustangs, and the contest will be simulcast live on Spectrum SportsNet and ESPN+.

Long Beach State faces top seed UC Irvine on the road Thursday, January 30th at 6 p.m. before heading back home to host UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, February 1st at 2 p.m.
