Long Beach State Earns Big Win Over UC Davis To Remain Lone Undefeated Team In The Big West

Savannah Tucker recorded her fourth 20-plus point game of the season in the victory
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State and UC Davis came into the Walter Pyramid on Saturday afternoon both undefeated in Big West action. After securing a 73-60 victory, the Beach left the arena as the lone unbeaten team in the conference.
The Beach (9-5, 5-0) shot 45.8% form the field and 41.7% from long distance on their way to their fourth-consecutive win. Meanwhile, the Aggies saw their eight-game winning streak snapped as they dropped to 11-5 overall and 5-1 in league competition.
Senior guard Savannah Tucker set the tone for the Beach as she went off for her fourth 20-plus point game of the year, marking her eighth such contest of her career. Joining Tucker in double-figures was senior guard Patricia Chung who concluded the game with 15 points.
Both Tucker and Chung matched each other shooting 54.5% from the field (6-11) and 66.7% (2-3) from behind the arc. Tucker, however, outscored Chung at the line as she knocked down 8-of-10 free throws, while Chung went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe.
Chung, along with graduate forward Rachel Loobie, led the Beach in rebounding as the pair each grabbed seven boards. Loobie would go on to finish the game with six points, two blocks, one steal, and one assist.
The Beach started the game off hot. LBSU shot 50.0% (7-14) from the field and 60.0% (3-5) from long distance in the first quarter. Tucker got the Beach on the board first with a driving layup which sparked a 6-0 run to open the game. Long Beach State led by as many as 12 (20-8) in the frame after Tucker sunk both free throws at 3:27. However, UC Davis would not go away. The Aggies used a 10-0 run to cut the Beach's lead down to two (20-18) with just 33 seconds left. Loobie snapped the LBSU scoring drought with a pullup jumper with 24 seconds on the clock as the Beach took a 22-19 lead into the second quarter.
Long Beach State continued its solid shooting as they outscored UC Davis 13-3 in the second quarter. The Beach defense held the Aggies to a 7.1% field goal percentage as they were limited to just one field goal on 14 attempts in the frame. While the LBSU defense kept UC Davis off the board for most of the quarter, the Beach offense closed out the frame on a 7-0 run thanks to a pair of layups from Jones-Brown followed by a triple for Chung as Long Beach held a 35-22 advantage over the Aggies at halftime.
In the second half, Long Beach kicked off the third quarter shooting 47.1% (8-17) from the field, while the Aggies shot 23.5% (4-17) on their way to outscoring UC Davis, 19-14, in the frame. LBSU led by as many as 21 points after a fast break layup from Tucker put the hosts on top 53-32 with 1:42 on the clock. The Beach held the lead throughout the quarter and took a 54-36 lead over UC Davis into the fourth quarter.
UC Davis's offense awoke in the final 10 minutes of action as they outscored the Beach 24-19 in the frame. The Aggies used a 10-0 run in the fourth to cut the Beach's lead down to 11 (60-49) with 5:51 remaining. Despite Davis chipping away, Long Beach State remained composed and shot 53.8% from the field in the quarter after making 7-of-13 field goals. The Beach went on to win, 73-60, as they never trailed in 40 minutes of action.
Mazatlan Harris and Ryann Bennett led UC Davis with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Harris also led the squad with seven rebounds. Bennett, along with Rachel Norris and Victoria Baker, each finished with three assists, while Tova Sabel picked up three steals, and Ally Fitzgerald posted a pair of blocks.
Long Beach State hits the road next week as the Beach will face UC San Diego on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. in La Jolla. LBSU will then go head-to-head with Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. at Titan Gym. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
