Long Beach State Falls At UC San Diego 79-68

Tucker & Richards combine for 43 of the 68 LBSU points

LA JOLLA, Calif. --- UC San Diego defeated Long Beach State 79-68 in Big West women's basketball action Thursday night at LionTree Arena.

The Tritons sprinted out to an 8-0 lead as UCSD forced four LBSU turnovers in the first two minutes of the first quarter. The Beach called timeout. Mykelle Richards scored four straight points for Long Beach State out of the timeout to cut the lead in half for LBSU.

The Beach continued to chip away, drawing the score to 9-8 on Richards' third field goal midway through the period. Long Beach State held UC San Diego scoreless over the next two minutes, forcing seven missed shots before Junae Mahan's basket with just over three minutes to play. Jada Crawshaw made 1-of-2 free throws on the ensuing LBSU possession for an 11-9 game.

Despite missing 11 of its final 12 field goal attempts in the final portion of the first period, the Tritons held a 17-11 in the closing portion of the frame. A Patricia Chung three-pointer with 26 seconds remaining made it 17-14 after 10 minutes of action.

The Tritons started fast again in the second as UCSD posted the first four points of the period. Richards and Chung responded with baskets to reduce the lead to 21-18. At the media timeout midway through the second, UC San Diego led Long Beach State 23-20. The Tritons outscored the Beach 11-5 in the final 3:50 of the first half to take a 34-25 lead into halftime.

Long Beach State scored the first four points of the third quarter, closing to 34-29 when Rachel Loobie put back a Richards miss. UCSD responded with four in a row to push the lead back to eight. Richards and Kayanna Spriggs traded baskets before Sumayah Sugapong's three-pointer extended the advantage into double digits for the Tritons. Sabrina Ma's three-pointer capped off an 8-0 run as Long Beach State called timeout, trailing 45-31 at the five-minute mark of the third.

Long Beach State chipped away again, cutting the lead to 10 when Chung connected on a three-pointer with 3:12 remaining in the third quarter. After an LBSU timeout, Gracie Gallegos' three-point play increased the UCSD advantage to 13. Savannah Tucker's four-point play with 47 seconds reduced the score to 53-42. UC San Diego scored on their next possession before Loobie's free throws concluded the quarter with the Tritons up 55-44 after 30 minutes.

Tucker scored eight straight points to begin the fourth quarter to get to the Beach to 57-52. A-Ma three-pointer cut down the LBSU surge before Tucker responded with her 11th consecutive point, a three-pointer at 6:23 to make it a five-point game again. Condron and Gallegos scored on back-to-back possessions, pushing the Tritons' lead out to nine.

Lovely Sonnier and JaQuoia Jones-Brown responded with baskets for the Beach, making it 64-60. At 4:05, Junae Mahon extended the advantage to six for the Tritons. Sonnier was 1-of-2 from the free throw line 30+ seconds later, keeping it a two-possession game. She got her offensive rebound on the free throw miss. Loobie was fouled going to the basket and made both free throw attempts with 3:33 remaining.

Parker Montgomery's three-pointer the next time down for the Tritons again created a six-point lead for UCSD. After an LBSU foul, Montgomery again hit from three-point range with 2:19 to go. Loobie's basket a little over 20 seconds later led to a Ma three-pointer. With 64 seconds to go, Tucker's three-pointer made it 75-68 as Long Beach State called timeout.

The Tritons took 30 seconds off the clock before Chung stole the ball from Ma. Tucker missed a three-pointer, but Loobie grabbed the rebound. She missed a three-point attempt as Ma grabbed the rebound. UCSD called a timeout. Long Beach State had two fouls to give before sending the Tritons to the free-throw line, which came with 13.4 seconds remaining.

Gallegos made the first attempt but missed the second. She grabbed her rebound and was fouled again. She was 1-of-2 before Long Beach State missed a field goal attempt. Montgomery was fouled on the rebound, and her two free throws resulted in the final score of 79-68.

LBSU shot 40.7 (24-59) from the field, while UCSD was 27-of-69 (39.1%) from the floor. The Tritons made 17-of-24 free throw attempts, while the Beach made 13-of-22 from the charity stripe. UC San Diego outrebounded Long Beach State 43-42. The Tritons forced 21 LBSU turnovers, making 11 steals.

Tucker played all 40 minutes, scoring a game-high 26 points. Richards charted 17 points and seven rebounds for Long Beach State. Ma and Gallegos each scored 17 to lead the Tritons (7-11, 3-3 Big West).

Long Beach State (9-6, 5-1 Big West) will look to bounce back from its first conference loss Saturday afternoon at Cal State Fullerton (2-15, 0-7 Big West). Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 2 p.m.
